Bizarre. Johnson arguably won that fight against the magazine ‘fighter of the year’. Against a very live Toney, 100x the fighter Jones bounced around the ring against who was fresh off an IV drip. Around that time Roy Jones Sr was paying Johnson more attention than his own son due to their sparring (which Johnson controlled). This was not the shadow who fought at 175lb. Reggie Johnson in the early 90s was smoother and more skilled than Roy Jones could ever dream. So was Michael Nunn (far more impressive the way he stood right in front of a live Toney and just completely dominated - Jones wouldn’t stay in one spot for a second).
what happened to Toney in this fight? was it his weight? He always seemed to be a step too slow and I found it hard to give him a round
He was in the region of 240lb about six weeks out. Steve Collins saw him training for Jones in LA and couldn’t believe how out of shape and lazy he was, drinking a gallon of Sprite/7Up between rounds of speedball.
Two split decisions, one v a small welter, did you see what Toney did to Barkley? Duran looked better v Barkley than Nunn did, he certainly landed more.
It's been a while since I watched it. I'm recalling what a lot of people are as well, Toney was way overweight and had to lose a bunch of lbs to make weight. This wasn't a one off thing for Toney though and he had done this before. It was also no fault of Jones who won almost every round. Jones also was so freakishly fast at this time Toney couldn't counter Jones. The knockdown was an off balanced Toney who was trying to copy Jones taunt, whether it was a bump or not I don't remember, it could have been after Jones landed that hook. Toney wasn't hurt but it was obvious he was embarrassed.
The comfortable majority score the fight for Toney. There's certainly no need for the word "arguably" regarding Jones - Toney as Toney is lucky if he's given a round. Speaking of which how many rounds did Reggie win against Jones in a real life boxing match? The answer is 0. Your saltiness at Jones for whupping Toney is all encompassing. In the biggest fight of his life he got completely schooled.
He has a bias to the early 90`s, Eubank, Benn and Nunn etc. It`s his mind and opinions stayed in the prevailing wisdom of that era.
I don't buy the whole "drained to a corpse" thing. Yes, he cut a large amount, but cutting 40 lbs isn't in any way unheard of and he was used to cutting a lot so I don't see why he should fail miserable for such an important fight. Jones was just better and I don't know if I gave Toney a round.
