Don't lie to yourself. Tyson was in there, swinging, able to keep his power in the late rounds and lost to Buster Douglas. He wasn't unbeatable. Furthermore, you can't say both Liston and Tyson are unbeatable in a brawl. If they brawled, one of them would win. Which is it?
Julio Cesar Chavez. He was so good at making opponents do what wasn't the best for them against him stand and fight. Than he would expertly take them apart piece by piece. He had all the tools to defeat most opponents in a fire fight, or brawl. Great defense, a steel hard chin when something did get through. Devastating body attack, thudding power, though not paralyzing. AGGRESSION!!!! As he aged and went up in weight he could get out maneuvered. But in his prime, he was a a machine. Only a very select few, maybe prime Duran, Armstrong, Arguello or Saddler could meet him in the trenches and come out victorious.
I disagree. Both the Matthyse and Bradley fights were brawls, and Provo lost both. Furthermore, do you think he'd beat every fighter at 140lbs in a brawl? Kostya Tzysu? Aaron Pryor? Julio Cesar Chavez?
Matthyse kept him at bay with his power and he did look beat up in the Bradley fight, but that wasn't an upclose chest to chest war, Bradley was kind of running and Tszyu and Pryor would have to box him and the Chavez fight would always be risky for Chavez as Chavez isn't a defensive master himself
It doesn't have to be an up close chest to chest war. It was a kind of brawl, where Matthyse's ring generalship and power won. Imagine if he was in with Ike Williams instead of Lucas. It'd be a bloody mess.
Chuvalo Bonavena Saddler Zivic Bummy Davis Fullmer Klaus Bat Battalino Hudkins ( with knobs on ) Keep well.
I never claimed Tyson was unbeatable. My point is he was not prepared for that fight, neither physically, nor mentally. Douglas might have even beaten a prepared Tyson, anything is possible, but Tyson clearly wasn't. Honestly, I don't know which one comes out on top, they are both incredible. When I said they couldn't be beaten in a brawl, I meant in their own era.
