So he is not super middleweight, he needs to make a weight for his fights. Why was he trying to fight Bivol at the catchweight if his natural weight is 175 at the moment ? This content is protected
If he's 175 with two weeks to go he's probably pretty small for a SMW. Actually, he isn't much bigger than during his days at 154. Even back then he'd come into the ring at 170+. I'm surprised he isn't bigger nowadays. Callum Smith was more a case of a LHW squeezing into SMW. He must have been around 190 in the ring as a SMW.
So the whole idea of that fight happening was due to Bivol's interest in making a fight with Canelo. For years Bivol has talked about how he is a very small LHW and could make 168. Bivol went on the record and said that he can come down to 168 no problem. So saying that Canelo was trying to fight Bivol at the catchweight is not accurate. Bivol talked about coming down to 168 on his own, then when the two sides talked about the fight happening, Bivol backtracked and started talking about a catchweight saying that he needed more time before he could make 168 safely. It was Bivol's side who publicly expressed a desire to come down to 168 and fight Canelo. The Bivol fight was only talked about when the Plant negotiations fell through for September, before negotiations resumed with Plant's team.
He just cuts less weight and does more weight and strength training so he is explosive. His power wont have travelled up - its probably the same as his GGG fights - but he has less talented and bigger and more static targets in front of him so his higher skill set works very well. As long as he can cut off the ring and get a 3-5 second window to counter you regularly he will win the fight. If you are a mover then he will have trouble. He also has bad knees so keeping Canelo on the outside - out of range - and resetting him constantly will stop him setting his counters.
A SMW weighing 175 two weeks out is unusual how? Its pretty standard... & Actually demonstrates just how big Canelo actually is… Not how small… I guarantee he walks around at near 190.. all the 'p4p' guys except Loma & a couple of others maybe have been recently fighting at weights 30lbs + below their actual normalised weight
Why did you even create this thread? He is already visibly slower at 190 and more. We saw that in the Kovalev fight. 168-175 lbs is perfect weight for Canelo. He is both fast and has good stamina. We gonna see very fast and slick Canelo in the Plant fight.
But he is fighting at 175 and Canelo is natural 175 right now, why even talk about catchweight ? Why you guys even trying to defend something like that ? Bivol don't fight at that weight, why make him do something that he don't usually do, just to make Canelo fight comfortably ? and his belt on the line, but not at the weight that he holds the belt, pathetic. For fanboys that were saying that Canelo is natural super middleweight and don't need to make weight for his fights
Nobody fights at their walking around weight really. Thats why its called weight cutting, when you fight in a specific weight class. You can glance at Canelo, and any logical person can see hes not a natural LHW. He started his career as a 140 pounder ffs.
He is naturally robust middleweight but can make even 190 lbs without much difficulty. We never supposed Canelo as Sam Langford. Calm down.
The picture doesn’t mean much as that could be a dehydrated weight after a workout. Bringing Bivol down a weight class would work in Canelo’s favour and we know how as an A-side, Canelo likes to to gain every advantage possible.
That's not much at all for someone at 168. UFC fighters like Khabib and Poirer walk around at 190 and compete at 155. I wouldn't be surprised if MMA fighters cut more than boxers, though. But I'd be very surprised if for example Benavidez walk around at 180 lbs. I would guess that the bigger SMW fighters walk around at around 200 lbs and is 185-190 fight night.
I don't think you will find a top SMW who doesn't need to make weight. In fact, I'd expect them to be bigger than Canelo in general.
