Putting all the political crap and controversy that surrounds him to one side, I enjoy watching Canelo box. Though not what I'd consider a complete boxer, he has some very fine skills. But this is way, way too high an accolade.

I'm in no way a fan-boy of Canelo, but on paper I will find it hard to not put Canelo in the top 20 if he does indeed beat Plant for undisputed. He's systematically gone through a few divisions now, not necessarily unifying in all of them but beating at least one of the top dogs.

NB: I would put him 19th/20th depending on my mood that day, no higher than that.

I do think history will be kind to Canelo, unfortunately as the passage of time goes by a lot of his deplorable activities (dodgy beef and gift decisions!) will be gradually forgotten. Resume-wise on paper, it's a yes from me. Were a few of the decisions he's been given "gifts"? Yes, but unlike many I do for example think he won the 2nd GGG fight. Not comprehensively, but it was enough for me to know that Canelo was in the ascendency between the two.

It's obviously not entirely Canelo's fault that there is a dearth of other potential HOF/ ATG calibre opponents out there in last 10 years at 154>168, but I think this is where he may well have done himself a disservice by aging out GGG.

One need only look at the 4 Kings to see that the true greats, were measured by their willingness to duke it out with other greats - win, lose or draw. And for anyone, in any era, that means you need at least 1, preferably more dance partner that is also elite or near-elite.

I think Canelo could have had a better resume if he had left 154 earlier and buckled down attempting to be Undisputed @160 - even though undisputed @168 technically hasn't been done, it's not the marquee weight division that 160 is historically, and even if Canelo had taken on GGG after he beat Cotto and lost, I think he would have probably come back and won the 3rd in a trilogy, possibly even to be undisputed @160. He then could have thought about moving to 168 and then 175.

Much of him moving up and down fits the whole cherry-pick narrative, and not 'finishing business' at other weights
    > up to 168 to 'test the waters' against Fielding and pick up a trinket belt.
    > up to 175 to beat Kovashell for another weight division trinket

Here's who Canelo DIDN'T fight (names taken from Rummy's Top 10 by Decade top 10s btw)

    154
    • Miguel Cotto (2) (technically NOT at 154, but he obvs did at 160 catchweight later)
    • Vanes Martirosyan (6)
    • Jermell Charlo ((7)
    • Demetrius Andrade(8)
    • Carlos Molina, Jermall Charlo (9)
Did fight: Lara (1), Trout (4) and Mayweather (5)

    160
    • Sergio Martinez (2)
    • Daniel Geale (3)
    • Felix Sturm (4)
    • Daniel Jacobs (6) - fought later @168 of course
    • Billy Joe Saunders (7) - fought later @168
    • Peter Quillin (8)
    • Matthew Macklin (9)
    • David Lemiuex (10)
    Did fight GGG x2 (1)

Once can make an argument that Canelo did fairly well at cleaning out 154 given he technically faced all of the top 5* of the 2010s.

But 160 is another thing entirely - he only actually had 2 'bona-fide' fights at 160 and that was the 2 GGG fights, after which he left to go to 168 - I guess the rationale as to why he moved up only Canelo can answer (considering he vacated the 160 belt after claiming to not be natural 160lber!!!) . No one really going to suggest that Amir Khan and JCC Jr were legitemate 160 scalps surely?

Anyways, as can be seen from the lists, GGG aside, there's not really much of a dance partner selection for HOF/ ATG consideration really is there?

Canelo v GGG trilogy would have elevated both fighters IMO, but partially because Canelo didn't fight GGG early enough, and partially because he decided to move to 168, we'll never know how that would have went.

Do people ACTUALLY think Lara and trout beat Canelo? Tough, close fights, I can MAYBE see Lara... But trout.... Come on now.

Respect for a well though out answer!

I'd by your standards he fought an elite Mayweather. Win draw lose, he showed a willingness to fight the best, no?

I'd say after the 2nd GGG fight he's basically taken the best fights available. I hear what your saying about 168 not having the prestige of 160. That being said for a smaller man moving up must count for something.

I guess the argument is whether he should have stayed at 160 and fought Charlo, Andrade, and GGG.

But are those three names better than an undefeated Smith, with his 7 inch height/ reach advantage, BJS undefeated 2 time world champ, and Kov?

I realize Kov is old... But so is GGG. I think the size difference between Canelo and these guys at 168-175 is worth taking into account.

That being said, I think Canelo needs to fight David Benavidez, Bivol, & Beterbeiv before he gets close to top 20 all time.

If Charlo, and Andrade move to 168 he should fight these guys too.

Good point - and I gave Canelo props for fighting Mayweather - although I wonder whether that was a possible miscalculation by Oscar there, given that Mayweather was already fairly small for 147, and didn't look quite as unbeatable against Cotto @154 a year prior. I suspect it was maybe an educated gamble that Mayweather (hitting 36) was maybe ripe for the picking.

Obviously it didn't turn out that way - I had it nearly a shutout to Floyd 11-1.

But it's probably the best thing Canelo could have done, as he learned a ton from that defeat IMO.

FWIW - i very much blame Oscar for aging out GGG - I think Canelo would have taken that fight no problems, but it was Oscar that pulled the strings then.

Canelo fighting Mayweather wasn't a miscalculation by Oscar. Oscar advised Canelo not to fight Mayweather at that time. It was Canelo's decision to fight him when he did. When it came to fighting GGG, he was being advised by DLH to drop the belt because the WBC gave him a 15-day timetable to agree to terms following the Khan fight and he had never fought at 160 before which is where the fight would be at. After what happened with Mayweather, Canelo was more receptive to Oscar's advice this time when it came to GGG. He was also in litigation with his former promoter at the time.

Ever heard of reasonable doubt? There's no reason to doubt that the steak he ordered that night caused the failed drug test. The findings were consistent with consuming contaminated meat. Of course there's no way to be sure 100%, but given the situation, he should be given the benefit of the doubt.
