Rocky Marciano v Roland LaStarza II

Thanks to @William Walker for bringing this to our attention. The fight in its entirety. Scored on the NY rounds basis.

    Round 1: LaStarza
    Round 2: Even
    Round 3: LaStarza
    Round 4: Marciano
    Round 5: Marciano
Round 6: LaStarza (Marciano's round but he loses the round due to having been warned several times for low blows)
    Round 7: Marciano
    Round 8: Marciano
    Round 9: Marciano
    Round 10: Marciano
Round 11: Marciano drops and stops LaStarza

Total through 10 completed rounds: 6-3-1 Marciano (actual scores: 6-4, 7-3 and 5-5 with Marciano leading)

A good, hard fight and LaStarza was a talented and gutsy challenger, but he was coming apart beginning with round 9 and was only a matter of time as Rocky whittled away at him. Good to see them in action and I was properly impressed with Rocky's short left hook, which I never really gave him credit for before. Good fight.

Me and @PhillyPhan69 have a friendly disagreement over which is the better fight out of Arguello-Escalera 1 and 2. He thinks 1 and it is a closer fight on the cards as Escalera manages to stay on his feet the whole time but in 2, there looks absolutely no way back for El Salsero after the 5th round and he is a mile behind on points at the halfway stage but mounts a tremendous offense for several rounds. It's never enough to even things up on the cards but it does seem feasible going into the 13th that he could turn it around. Then Arguello puts him down and finally out with another perfect left hook and just like that, it's over - a more satisfying and definitive conclusion than the first fight.

True, but so is the other. Have to admit though Bloody Battle of Bayamon is more dramatic.

Its been a while since I've watched a Hide fight, didn't he have an issue with not being able to relax during fights (causing him to tire quickly)?

Perhaps but this looked more like a full-blown panic attack to me. Getting tired and actually locking up and falling down without really being hit are two different things.

Meldrick Taylor v John Meekins (jr. welterweight title)

Still on my John Meekins kick. But I won't run a card here. Although this bout was fought at a sizzling pace with crisp punches and combos throughout the bout, I could only give Meekins a share of the 6th round before the doctor stopped it between the 7th and 8th round due to damage to Meekins right eye. I had it 70-64 for Taylor while the judges also had it for Meldrick by scores of 69-64, 69-64 and 70-63. This bout was fought at such a sharp high skill level it was over before I knew it. Good fight.

Duran v Sims is a perfect 10 rounder and a great way to spend 30-45 mins watching boxing.

Joey Ruiz v Joe Frazier, Jr.

Just watched a good old-fashioned club fight from 1985. A fight from Atlantic City between two hot prospects in Ruiz and Frazier. Here we go on the NJ rounds scoring.

    Round 1: Frazier
    Round 2: Ruiz
    Round 3: Ruiz
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Frazier
    Round 6: Frazier
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Ruiz
    Round 9: Ruiz
    Round 10: Frazier

Total: 4-4-2 Draw (actual scores: 5-5, 5-5 and a 6-4 for Ruiz for a majority Draw)

I had no issue with this decision obviously. I think Joey did himself a disservice fighting on the inside (which was Joe's bread and butter) for so many rounds, but it made a good fight for us. When he could keep Joe on the end of his jab and sharp combos he was great. However, maybe Joe just didn't give him a choice with his grinding style. I was at odds listening to Bernstein and Bontempo's view on the fight and their scores moving forward. But it was a tight fight where a slight shift may alter a round to one's perception. But a good fight.

My card won't reflect the majority. I am a bias fan of Griffith truth be told.
What I noticed in this fight is just how much better Emile was then I remembered him being it has been a while but after watching this fight in it's entirety and playing back certain spots in slow motion Carlos really didn't land as much as I thought or quite dominate like we hear so often and was countered a lot and had his head snapped back by Griffs jab plenty. Truly a good bout.

Larry Holmes v Renaldo Snipes (Heavyweight title)

Haven't seen this since the day it was aired. Thought I would give it a gander. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 2: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 3: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 4: 10-9 Snipes
    Round 5: 10-8 Holmes (battering)
    Round 6: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 7: 10-8 Snipes (scores a knockdown)
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 10: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 11: Holmes stops Snipes

Total through 10 completed rounds: 97-92 Holmes (actual scores: 97-91, 96-91 and 96-93 all for Holmes)

Renaldo Snipes' herky-jerk style served him well in his career. Because at his best (which was probably this fight) you never quite knew when and where that crazy right hand was coming from. He was tough and gutsy but Holmes had it under control until that right hand came out of nowhere to set things spinning. Regarding my score, I did give Holmes a 10-8 for the 5th round because I really felt he gave Snipes a going over and deserved it. Regarding the stoppage, you could go back and forth on this whether it was premature or not, but I am reminded of the Ali-Lyle bout and the similarity. Both fighters were trapped in a corner, not throwing anything back, the bout was stopped and screams of an early stoppage. But to tell you the truth, both fights would have ended the same way only both fighters lived to gripe about it. Funny enough, they both ended in the 11th too.

Reminds me of an excerpt From "The Ring: Boxing the 20th Century" which I happened to pass by while reading this post.
"In preparing for his 11th defense, WBC Champion Larry Holmes ordered tapes of his opponent, unbeaten New Yorker Renaldo Snipes. After only a few minutes he turned off his VCR for fear of growing overconfident"

Nice. I intend to get to this one and Holmes-Berbick when time allows (maybe over the holidays?).

    Thanks for the recap.

I decided to re-watch this one, a controversial chess match, that I had not actually seen fully since it aired live in 2017, which I had never scored. Let's get to it.

'Canelo' Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin I

    Canelo : GGG

1: 10 - 9 Very close, basically even. Canelo on two effective shots.
2: 10 - 9 Close again. Body shots from Canelo. Neither landing much.
3: 9 - 10 GGG working more, getting his range. Canelo not active enough or really landing.
4: 9 - 10 Canelo on the ropes. Looks tired.
    5: 9 - 10 Skilled exchange on the ropes.
    6: 9 - 10 GGG forcing the action

    56 - 58

7: 9 - 10 GGG jabbing prolifically. Canelo too inactive.
    8: 9 - 10 Closer. Canelo looks gassed.
9: 10 - 9 Great work from both. Very close.
    10: 10 - 9 Great round.
    11: 9 - 10 Close. GGG's activity makes the difference.
12: 10 - 9 Fine finale. I gave to Canelo on effect and early work.

    57 - 57

    TOTAL: 113 - 115 GOLOVKIN

    Notes:
    • Closer than I remember from watching live years ago. A draw verdict is not as ridiculous as I previously thought. One close round for Canelo instead of GGG and I would have had the same result. Anything from a draw to 8 - 4 Golovkin is OK in my opinion.
    • Fine skills and action!
    • Deserved a re-watch and proper scoring.
    • I watched @Mario040481 HQ Spanish version, but couldn't find it on YouTube to link, so here's another one.
