    I’ll never forget the hype around London for this, EVERYONE was talking about it. None of us kids had actually seen Watson but lots were tipping him saying things like ‘my dad says this or that about Watson -trust me’, we’d all seen Benn of course and thought he was an unbeatable demolisher in our little pea brains

    Lost a few quid that day, had a double on, Watson to win and Liverpool to win FA cup in 90 minutes, Everton equalised with last kick of the 90 minutes, gutted to say the least.

    No idea what he’s doing now but I think he did a couple of short stretches inside possibly for fraud and burglary.

    God knows what the viewing figures for that fight were but the press conference looked like it was done in the convention room of a pub and it was revealed Nigel would be getting a purse of 300k !!

    So yeah things were a lot different back then

    Probably in the region of (mean average) 9M on a Sunday night on ITV around 10:30 (after the ring walk of Benn and extravagant introductions). I suspect figures ‘peaked’ around 11-12M. I remember Jonathan Ross and Linda Lusardi being ringside and Carlsberg sponsoring it.

    A Commonwealth trophy fight.

    Carl Froch’s World title fights on ITV got 1.9M (peaking at 2.2M) by comparison.

    Did anyone here go?

    Intrigued to know if the Finsbury Park "Supertent" was anything like as weird as it sounds. Can't find any decent pictures of it online.
