12 rounds. Prime versions. I reckon this would be a good brawl. Similar styles. Might be a foul fest though.
I'd pick Whyte to beat Skelton reasonably handily. I'd also pick Chisora, Parker, Rivas, Povetkin and Helenius to beat Skelton. It would be a fun fight though.
That isn't really saying a lot, though. The two fights you're on about are likely 'peak Skelton', as far as his run at pro boxing goes, at a stage in Williams' career, when he was being taken to a split decision (W) and then subsequently TKO'd by Audley Harrison. Whyte outdoes Skelton, both in terms of the eye-test and the level at which he as competed.
Same level. British level, good enough to challenge for a "major" world belt. Williams was still decent when he fought Skelton. I believe he came into the 2nd Audley fight on very late notice.
I don't think one shot at a title - a convincing loss, to boot - is the equalizer, in terms of level, when put up against a Ring-Rated Boxer (for the past five years, with the last three of those in the Top-5). Whyte has consistently faced a better level of opponent, in a way Skelton never did. Williams was not a world class heavyweight - ever - and certainly not by 2006. I am not sure he could even be considered Euro-level, to be honest. Seriously, just look at his weight for the second Skelton bout. He was so bad, he made Skelton look half-decent, until the steam went out of both of them. To put this into perspective, he came in 20lbs lighter for Harrison fight, at only a week or so notice, than he did for Skelton (II).
dude. I think some of what you say has merit. I do think Whyte has become a little overrated, I don't think that's unreasonable. But you're overreaching with Skelton. Skelton got thrashed by Price. I think that was late in the day tbf, and as you've said, he got a late start, but still. He was fun and a fight with Whyte would be fun, but Whyte has clearly beat better men than some of those that Skelton lost to.
Whyte got rated 5 years ago by Ring magazine for being smacked around and KO'd by AJ and getting a disputed decision (at least 50% had him losing) over Chisora then? That's good for him. It is curious. I don't make the Ring ratings. Since then, a disputable win over Parker (who is, unfortunately, it seems, operating barely above Chisora level) is Whyte's best win. In 2020, his only outing was getting sparked out by a 40 year old Povetkin in 5 rounds!... and he still finished the year ranked #4. I suppose Covid lockdown might account for that. Either way, we're probably talking about a terribly weak division. Danny Williams was British-level, and had weight issues, yes. I'm definitely not suggesting he was world class.
