Wilder fans will say that is a good fight, but they were saying that he needs to fight TOP guys, I would bet that 99% of his fans heard this name for the first time. Not a good look for top 10 boxer.
Standard Wilder, back to journeyman opponents. Given his age and the combination of hand injury and reliance on power, it really is now or never if he's going to prove he was truly championship level at all... And this ain't close to doing that. Having said that, if he wins easily (he should) and then gets back in the ring soon after with a decent fighter for a change then fair enough - not sure I'll hold my breath given his record, though.
Unfortunately for the carrier, Deontay Wilder's lack of the jab makes it harder and harder for him now that the boxing worlds respect has dropped. Future opponents will box far more auggressively against him. Let´s see how he does.
After Lewis lost to Oliver McCall, his next two fights were against journeymen sub-6 footers Lionel Butler (22-10-1, 3 KO defeats, 2 by DQ) and Justin Fortune (11-2-1, 2 KO defeats). After Wlad lost to Corrie Sanders, his next two fights were against Argentinian journeyman Fabio Eduardo Moli (29-2) and 36 year old Danell Nicholson in his last career fight (42-4, 3 KO defeats). Unlike these past champions, Wilder has absorbed two sustained beatings and KO defeats on the bounce to the 6'9, 275 lbs heavyweight champion, rather than an early upset KO loss to a fringe contender. Yet in his next fight he's scheduled to step in with a stronger opponent than either past champ fought in their next two. This is on top of the fact that in his last 6 fights and 3.5+ years you'll struggle to find anyone in the sport of boxing who has fought stronger and more dangerous competition than Wilder.
Lewis was 25 fights into his career and still in his 20s. Wilder is in his late 30s and 40 odd fights into his career. There’s no excuse for fighting another flabby ***** titted journeyman but yet of course you try and find one.
I would rather if he faced Ruiz instead(both because It’d be a good fight and the loser can get lost for good), but after back to back brutal beat downs, this is an acceptable opponent and puts him right back to the title scene so It makes sense.
Would rather Deontay rematch Nichols, then fight that big blob Ruiz. I don't want to see him anywhere near that rotund brute, gulp.
I'm not a Wilder fan but after being completely outboxed and destroyed 2 times in a row, it's really not that bad of a fight (not a good fight, but as a confidence builder). I'd giggle my ass off if he took this fight and lost though (I know there's almost no chance of that happening). After this fight, I'm almost certain Haymon throws him and Ruiz together, he needs Wilder coming off of another eye catching knockout to sell that potential fight.
What did people expect? Of course Wilder is not going to suddenly jump in with Fury again, Usyk or Joshua. They're all tied up. He can't face Whyte for the same reason. Then there's just a bunch of puddings like Rice Pudding Jr, Paint Dry, Chisora, Joyce, Hrgovic and so on who are all tied up or injured. Aside from that, many of these blokes are not going to want to face Wilder as the risk reward is absolutely on the slide. It's a decent, yet easy fight for Wilder. The only joke is this WBA (regular) belt.
Can't say I'm surprised though I am a little disappointed. I had hoped without a belt or his 0 to protect he'd take some more risks but I guess a leopard doesn't change it's spots. But a quick KO over Bryan to build his confidence might be the smarter choice after 2 crushing defeats, though he's not a young fighter anymore, seems like a waste of time when he probably only has a handful of fights left.
