I’ll take some heat off George just for a moment, God love him.

This exchange occurred during the commentary for Sanchez v Nelson.

Of course little was known re Azumah aside being from Ghana, 13-0, 10 KOs.

As the fight was progressing and Nelson was doing amazingly well in warrior like fashion, Larry Holmes said that boxing was important for African fighters as it was their “only way out” You know, Larry trying to talk up the impoverished, hungry fighter angle.

Larry’s co-commentator, who obviously failed to fully brief Holmes beforehand, dryly replied - “Larry, Nelson doesn’t come from a poor background, his father is a millionaire, involved in tailoring and fishing business’.

Straight after that DEAD SILENCE all the way to the bell ending that particular rd. Next rd, Larry, all perky again said “Well, it’s obvious Nelson really wants to be a fighter, his father’s a millionaire so he doesn’t HAVE to fight. A little giggle from Larry followed.

As per the premise of another thread, Larry the commentator took a big hit that wobbled him for a moment but came back with an absolute beaut to save the day. A true Champ in the ring and out.

shouldn't they do a bit of research on the guys beforehand? seems kind of an amateur mistake. great recovery though. self deprecating and humorous.

I don't remember what fight it was, but it was obviously before this kind of thing became commonplace. Anyway, each fighter was wearing a different brand of gloves. Jim Lampley questioned it, saying he'd never seen such a thing before, and asked George if he'd ever heard of each fighter wearing different branded gloves. "Never ever seen it before!" George replied emphatically.

Um... George... in YOUR rematch with Joe Frazier, you wore G&S gloves while Joe wore Everlast. So, um, not only have you seen it before, it happened in one of YOUR fights!

I doubt that the guest star commentators are prepped as well as the guys who do it regularly for a living.

Jake and Vikki LaMotta, along with someone who's name I forgot, called the Collins-Resto travesty. Resto's gloves were obviously misshapen on the YouTube video, but the unprofessional commentators didn't catch it. Nor did referee Tony Perez, who has a history of lapses of concentration.

Great time to bump this thread and relive some of the big man’s greatest HBO commentary moments.

He had many and I don’t remember a lot of them. But I did like his description of the first meeting between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe - “ it’s a fight between a Great Dane from Brooklyn and a junkyard dog from Georgia “

How about Foreman standing up during the 5th round of Holyfield vs Bowe 3, screaming to Joe Cortez “Stop the fight!” Then sitting back down he says “Holyfield will end up in a pine box.” Next round Holyfield drops and almost KO’s Bowe. Foreman was oddly silent after that and was even questioned by Lampley why he didn’t care to comment on the fight.

That reminds me of the HBO teaser for Bowe - Golota 1... Two dogs talking poolside about boxing, making cheese jokes and puns all the while. Real goofy and fun.

It's not a quote, but I really liked how he talked about McCall after the rematch with Lewis.
He sounded understanding and compassionate, contrary to Merchant.
    That was a class act.
