For example, prime Ali steps out of a time machine into the ring with Marciano. Ali has seen footage of Marciano, but Marciano knows nothing about Ali. Coming up with the matches this way, who is at the top of your H2H list for heavyweights?
Andy Ruiz Jr flashes into the 1890's. Fighters and ringside observers stare in bewilderment. Ruiz is here to win, but Sullivan and co. just laugh at him and he gets sent to a circus freakshow under the name 'The Great Blob'. The end. TKO Sullivan.
Lewis or one of the Klitschkos probably. Mind you Usyk would be horrid for anybody without any knowledge of him to fight, especially since he knows how they operate. He's be the sort of fighter to really squeeze the knowledge sponge the best.
Andy finds too much to eat in the 1880s with lower population and an abundance of food sources, but steps in for Jake Kilrain in the Mississippi heat and collapses from 480-pound exhaustion during the referee’s instructions. No contest.
I like the image of Lewis stepping into the ring in an era when they thought Jeffries and Johnson were big men. Usyk would be a nightmare for them, although it is a bit more fun to think of KOs... When I think of this scenario, please don't hate, I can't help but think of Tyson....
Yeah it would be pretty unfair for the old timers if they can not study up imo. Jack Dempsey may see Lewis enter the ring and think he may be facing other Jess Willard.
Yep. This is what's fun about this thought experiment. Nobody would expect Lewis to fight like he does. Would apply just as well, or even better, if you use Fury. Lewis looks like a monster just standing there. Fury looks more like your 7ft tall drunk uncle until he starts to move.
Ali or Louis. One of them becomes all-time champion, still, with multiple fights against all of the other greats. (IMHO, of course.) After the first fight, the old timers would adjust. And Dempsey and Johnson would surprise a lot of them.
Some of the bigger guys would be impressive, but the size *alone* isn't likely to intimidate the guys post-1910, since you've got guys like Willard and later Carnera who were as big. The modern guys will have a film advantage, but the film is mostly garbage quality, and they're not going to find any sparring partners who fight like the old guys anyway, so the impact is slightly reduced. Plus, they might think that the old timers look awful, and leave it at that, like Ali commented about Dempsey.
The fighter with the stylistic knowledge, would have an enormous advantage. Absolutely enormous. Back when fight film was not routinely available, fighters traveled to see potential opponents fight from ringside. Jack Johnson was not just traveling to watch guys like Jeffries, he was also traveling to watch guys like Kaufmann. When Floyd Patterson was preparing to fight Johansen, D'Amato was sending spies to watch Johansen spar. Bizarrely, the old timers then enjoy an advantage, simply because their is no good film of them! How do you prepare for Sullivan for example?
