In the previous surveys (the original ones from the traditional weight classes), I mostly spent time just talking about the statistics of the Survey itself. That was the way I originally scripted this newer one, where - for example, Henry Armstrong. I was going to note his placements from the previous surveys where he ranked at feather, light, welter, and the all time list. But after I wrote a few of them out that way, I thought it became too confusing and distracting from this Survey.

On the Top 50 Must Watch Boxing Fights, I did spend a minute or so quickly recapping each fight. I was also considering doing something like this for this one, but that would have likely taken me a month or more to complete, and I have too many other videos I'd like to release in the near future before year's end.

As for the criteria, I never did specify that there needed to be filmed fights of anyone for this particular survey (unlike the previous one on Must Watch Boxing Matches, where that was a stated prerequisite). I wasn't sure whether a guy like Greb would make the final cut or not. Turns out he did, and he appeared on fewer lists (just 6) than anyone else in the Top 50.

Thanks for the answer. They look great and make a great banner for the project.

Thanks (sincerely). I spent an entire night working on that.

Your first point is categorically wrong mate.

The assignment never once said it has to be someone you've seen.

My number one choice was Frank Bruno and that was much more to do with living through his struggle to achieve a title, than it ever was about watching his fight.

My 2nd was Joe Jeannette and that's based purely on him surviving 27 knockdowns to win a fight to the finish. I've never seen that fight, but every time I read about it I'm awe inspired.

I will just direct you to this from the OP "No real prerequisites. Just looking for professional boxers (and not boxers who only had a handful of fights, or less). I mean, if your Uncle Bob was a club fighter back in the day, someone that nobody else but you would have heard of - then Uncle Bob isn't really what we're gunning for here. But otherwise, your criteria defining your favorites is your own. There are no wrong answers."

I probably wouldn't have responded but for you to suggest the survey had been spoilt by someone's favourite being of a criteria you don't agree with. That's just not a fair comment at all.

Alright that's all fair enough and Rummy has weighed in - his word is supreme here, as this was his baby.

I just, bottom line, don't believe anyone saying their favorite is Greb. Nobody's going to convince me that's an honest answer from anyone, just like I'm obviously not going to change anyone's mind that it should have been a prerequisite.

(...and with your example of Jeannette, you maybe haven't seen that particular fight, but there is at least footage of some of his available. If you told me you hadn't ever watched a second of any of those, and you still liked him based solely on the surviving 27 knockdowns story, more than you like all but one fighter in history, without a gander of so much as one single frame of him in action, I'd have a difficult time accepting that as the deep-down truth as well. Not saying I'd call you a liar, because you do have my respect - but, would maybe question whether you just had yourself convinced of that when, if you actually sat and thought of every great moment in your time being a fan of boxing, there'd be more than a few others who probably deserved a spot above him, including for heroic exploits in the ring, or good deeds or being a stand-up person outside it, along with being pleasing to your sensibilities to view)

Given the amount of time me and many others have spent researching, discussing, and thinking about boxers that's there's no or only very limited footage of, it's pretty clear they can be favorites.

They can be fighters that you very much enjoy reading and learning about, of course. I'll let it lie there.

Don't get me wrong, I think watching fights it's better than reading articles and box rec also. It's why I'm not longer willing to edit the positions on my ATG lists save a recently retired boxer merits consideration.

And that's a rule about enjoyment of boxing, you have to watch it to enjoy it.

But, and as I said this applies to me with JJ and Bruno, there are exceptions to the rule.

Some boxing stories resonate more than boxing fights, here's an example I'd shamefully forgotten about when doing my list : Sam Langford, being blind and well on his way to being homeless, knocking out future ATG Tiger Flowers with a one punch on the inside. I'd pretty strongly argue that reading about that fight can invoke positive emotion much more than watching any fight. Especially if you're someone who reads a lot (I read about a book a fortnight on average) thus can "watch" the fight with your minds eye.

I mean do you remember Burt Beinstock. He's "watched" Dempsey vs Marciano in his head thousands of times to the point where he could "replay" his prediction just as eloquently as he could describe a fight he'd once seen at ringside.

We've been on these boards over a decade now with nery a bad post aimed at each other, so obviously I'm trying to be as respectful in my rebuttal as I can be, but I vehemently believe that in some cases, there's more to boxing than watching the fight itself.

I know Lupe Pintor is popular but I didn't realize he was so popular that he would appear at 159 and 385.

Good catch. That would bring his total to 77, which would bump him up a bit to #147.

While I'd like to promise that's the only instance of this that slipped through, I certainly cannot guarantee it.

I think you did the same with Vergil Ortiz in the active boxers survey? Unless there's a difference between Vergil Ortiz and Virgill Ortiz.
