Calzaghe wins a relatively close one on points. It would be similar to the Hopkins fight - Canelo would land the cleaner shots, but Joe's far superior work rate would win him the fight. Joe could probably even afford to get knocked down and still win (if we have fair cards). Canelo is a great fighter. Very intelligent, good defence, can cut the ring off, great chin, and has decent power and speed. However, his biggest weaknesses are slow foot speed, can be out worked, and he can be a little one paced at times. These are awful traits to have against someone with Joe's style. Joe's ring IQ and ability to change game plan will be important. Canelo makes minor adjustments in his fights as he starts getting a read on his opponent. Joe will need to make adjustment, too, to stop Canelo from gaining any real traction.
He was but that says a lot about how week the LHW division was at the time tbh. Jermain Taylor and Chad Dawson both beat the same old version of Hopkins that Calzaghe did and did it a lot more convincingly, yet no one jizzes their pants over those victories. So the fact that Calzaghe fans cling on the that (debatable) win so much tells you how thin his record is. Plus Calzaghe was a massive betting favourite going in that fight, it was supposed to be easy for him, which is something people forget. So the fight going the way it did kind of exposed him a little bit and probably showed why he spent most of career avoiding the really big fights. But then Calzghe's more die hard fans will probably claim that getting dropped and winning a highly debated SD against a 43 year-old Hopkins is more impressive than a guy who started out at welterweight KOing Kovalev. They will probably even claim that Calzghe has a better record. It's a bit cult like how deluded some of them are.
Calzaghe on points Stylistically, he causes Canelo at lot of issues. Still a great and close fight though.
Dawson did it years later and was a really bad style match up...Dawson is a real dissapointment as far as talented fighters go. N I didn't think Taylor deserved the wins .so I'd hardly say more convincing N betting odds go off what the public bet on...doesn't mean a fights gonna be easy...Josh Warrington was a betting favourite over Lara...what's your point
Calzaghe massive volume of shots would make it very hard for Canelo who likes to set himself for his counter shots.
I don't follow Calzaghe these days. Does anyone know if he has a drink problem? He is always red and has that red neck too. Could either be booze or test.
But there's no sting on them, and Canelo doesn't slice open easy. Joe doesn't work the body overly well too.
