Okay- not much of a historian. I can’t really find anything on it in my shallow search but surely even everyone then had to have wondered the same thing as me.

    Total guess:

Greco-Roman statuary was big in that era, and there was a certain degree of nudity that you could get away with because it was artistic and Classical. Made your sport look more civilized, sort of, by tying it into that tradition.

Corbett likely realized how much nudity he could get away with due to the above custom, and exploited it to show off. Especially to the ladies.

Perhaps we deem him ahead of his time, a would be “influencer” without the consequential influence, thank god?

But then again, Papke’s attire v Ketchel wasn’t so modest either. A delayed pick up on a shocking fashion twist maybe.

There’s also a pic of Fitz floating around, back to camera, flexing to show off his muscles.

He’s in tights I think but the material that should be covering his ass cheeks has been curiously cut out. Perhaps put down to natural wear and tear but I’m not sure how it would actually come to pass.

Maybe a legacy of the old long johns with the back trap door?

Then again (and again and again) maybe I’ve taken this particular anal-ysis a touch too far.

Another possibility, not entirely inconsistent with the other one:

Maybe modern shorts just hadn't been invented or perfected yet, and they were an early experiment in athletic wear to leave the legs free.

He was a type of David Beckham of his day. Wearing stuff that he thought made him look cool, but in reality, a total numpty!!

This is like having to explain the birds and the bees to people.

Just google when the groin protector was invented!

Yes, surely. Can you think of any male athletes wearing worse?

For maximum mobility, no doubt. It was probably just a style of swim shorts he was accustomed to wearing in the hoity-toity athletic club he came up in. For the Courtney "fight", the papers described it as a "red elastic breech clout"; which is a loincloth apparently. No one rocked it as well as Corbett, but Tommy Burns looked like his baIIs were getting ready to fall out of his shorts during his fight with Jack Johnson.
