Is the immorality of "battle royals" entirely due to their racism?

What did black champions who started off on the battle royals say about them?
Beau Jack seemed to credit them with giving him skills that served him well later on.

You are probably correct in your assumption, but even so it's difficult to categorically attach motivation to the filmmakers without knowing something about the context or back story of why they filmed it. For example, maybe they were filming to demonstrate the brutality and immorality of such a spectacle? Unlikely maybe, but it's possible.

A fair point, but I seem to remember watching footage posted on this forum before that may have been the same stuff, but with the original voice-over intact. Which was a pretty racist voiceover.

Seems like knowing something about the rule set would be helpful in passing judgment. Was it a free-for-all which allowed contestants to attack their opponents from behind? Or could a group of opponents gang up on one opponent? Or were the contestants blind-folded? Or were their obvious racist elements involved? I guess there's an argument that all battle royals might be considered immoral, but are there different degrees of immorality depending on the rule set and the way the rules (if any) were enforced?

Wrestling Entertainment still has them, as shows. I've never seen a Battle Royal in Real Club Wrestling, but I've seen 2 against 1, with all 3 in the ring at the same time, in such events.

I bet a for real, televised battle royale would be a big PPV ratings winner.
Especially if it had the two Paul brothers.

There are a number of events in HEMA, that involve fights between two groups of people.

I don't know if there is any dignity in it, but at least all the participants are doing it because they want to do it.

I’m not too familiar with the battle royal history myself, with the exception of when I watched professional wrestling as a kid and that was fake. But yes the thought of men dividing into large groups and beating the hell out of each other with limited or no rules sounds pretty barbaric.
