Only stopped once in his last 10 years as a pro. Never KO'd. Never had 10 counted on him in 293 fights, 1650 rounds. His "stoppage" loss to Hamed the second time was absolute bull****. One of the lamest I've ever seen. So 9 stoppages, knowing Buckley I'm sure a few others are crap too. First fighter to go the distance with Hamed, also. Second most active fighter behind Reggie Strickland. I've heard it said that he's won far more then he's given credit for, and watching him against Hamed the second time he's definitely no ordinary tomato can. Pretty skilled for what he is. Thoughts?
It's along the same lines as Reggie Strickland. Peter is a very experienced and smart fighter with a whole box of tricks for surviving in there. No matter who the opponent is, he'll duck and dodge and clinch and bamboozle his way to the end, and normally fights short bouts to help that as well. Offensively not much but defensively slippery and durable, and basically became a good guy to go to for promoters when they want an easy win for their fighters but also a few rounds under their belt. A true professional journeyman. His "have gloves will travel" reputation is extremely well known. His promoter at the time even joked that when Fan Man came down in Holyfield-Bowe '93, "for a moment we all thought it was Buckley trying to get another fight in."
Arguably the most robbed fighter of all-time. Could easily have another 30/40 wins to his name, due to .5/1 point defeats to home town/prospect fighters. Proven stats show he is the second most active (super) modern fighter; in reality he probably is top 10. Buckley is what is brilliant about boxing, a true pro with a dedicated trainer backing him up in Nobby Nobbs, who has a simply amazing stable of fighters.
Great stuff, TBooze. He's a really mellow and nice guy as well, read a interview with him from a few years ago yesterday. Very modest, and very open about him sometimes training almost not at all and getting called in within a few days or the day after he's been out drinking.
He announced his retirement in last March but it lasted only till June. Tomorrow he's taking already his 4th come back fight... and his last fight was just last friday
Anything new about Buckley? He's been pretty much taking a fight a week recently. Is he just going for 300 fights or he's really continuing his career? Does anyone know any way of getting to see his fight? They come and go so fast these days I wouldn't know where to buy the flight to So... if some one knows a video clip of some of his fights I'd love to see one. Or... if they show his fights it would be great if some one could record and put it online some where.
Fantastic boxer. I have nothing but admiration for all the lads who earn a living in the hardest sport of all.
