James Toney showed that skills pay the bills. If you're good enough and have power, you can do well despite being a smaller guy.

Canelo is even shorter and smaller than JT though.

Makabu's claim to fame was getting stopped by Bellew... and losing his pro debut by stoppage

Its a risk but a calculated one. He could have choosen Briedis who is not a much bigger cruiserweight then makabu and gotten way more respect if he beat him. Briedis is number 1 in the division.
Makabu is on the downhill for quite a while now and inactive,Shaky chin and leaky defence also. Canelo should have enough pop to get to him eventually. Canelo on the belt hunt throughout the divisions.Good for him

On the plus side, he'll shine the spotlight on a division that for ages has been seen as nothing more than a stepping stone on the way to heavyweight.

as long as its a step forward in legacy, im onboard. on 5 de mayo, become a 5 division champion, immediately after becoming first ever undisputed smw champion in a years campaign at that weight, will make him explode globally. you think hes hyped now, grab a beer.

They are reducing the limit to 190! Making Makabu fight at a weight he has not on YEARS. He will be weight drained as usual for Canelos foes

It's a bit dubious, but Makabu will get paid for his troubles.

Also Canelo should have the upper hand, but this is still a much larger opponent than he has ever faced. It'll make it slightly interesting.

I'm not mad at this. It's a bigger challenge than Charlo or Benavidez that everybody has been hyping.

The big question is what weight will he come in at. Would Canelo opt to stay at around 175 on fight night to give him enough flexibility to fight in three divisions simultaneously and rely on greater speed and talent to make up for the 15 pound difference?
