No disrespect to Watson who I admire but he got outclassed by MCcallum and that fight was never close. And yes Mike did savage his body.
You could probably make a top ten with just the ATG Mexicans and it’d be an acceptable answer to OPs question.
Mike Tyson could wreck the body in a short span early in his career, later it seems he went head hunting
Carlos Monzon was an effective body puncher ,usually to the heart area and upper chest.Jack Dempsey crippled men with his body attack. Check out Mickey Ward v Shea Neary. However the man nobody has mentioned who should certainly be in the top ten imo is Jim Jeffries. Both Corbett and Fitz credited Jeff's left hook to the body as terminally weakening them and readying them for the coup de grace .He also broke a couple of Sharkey's ribs and forced Ruhlin's corner to retire their man after his hook was buried into Gus's ribs. Jack Johnson stated only one of Jeffries punches actually hurt him and that was a left to the stomach. Credit where it is due.
Very true. Indeed the Beach Boys wrote a song about the body attack of some of the pocket rockets that featured at a well known stadium in Texas, popular with Mexican fighters. Who could forget this classic ? Zarate, zamora - their left hooks will gore ya Morales and Chavez leave your liver a mess Barrera, Canelo Ooh they may not leave you in a co-co-ma But you might end up with a sto-sto-ma When they are done with ya Way down in Alamo
Hi me. If anyone wonders wtf that was about, or if they aren't as old as me and don't remember the inspiration for that little verse, please see link below. I know @salsanchezfan knows it as it featured in a thread a few weeks ago and he got the reference. Sorry not to have included your hero, Sal. He deserves mention but didn't have a ready rhyme which is the key criterion for making my list. This content is protected
Actually, the start of that last post reminds me of another savage body puncher of Mexican descent. Jaime Garza. Check this fight for savagery. This content is protected
Tony Zale, Eder Jofre, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ruben Olivares, Mike McCallum, Carlos Zárate, Alexis Arguello are the first that came to my mind. Jofre doesn’t get talked of as one of the great body punchers which is strange as he turned so many fights with his body blows and has plenty of footage supporting this. He was deadly accurate and hurtful to the body. Zárate is another not mentioned as much as he should in this department. He had a tendency to take the play away from the opponent or simply begin the end of the fight once he went to the body.
Great shout for Pedroza, an excellent body puncher when he wasn't hitting opponents in the groin. Lol
Here's some very underrated body punchers . Though if you've actually watched them fight and not just highlights I'm sure you guys know. R.Robinson R.Leonard T.Hearns D.Lopez Jones Jr. P.Whitaker F.Trinidad. This group is mainly known for other attributes, but each of them were viscous going to the body. Also, let's include A.Nelson And J.Fenech.
