When SRL beat Benitez Wilfred was 38-0-1, Duran 72-1, Hearns 32-0 and Hagler 62-2-2. 204-3-3 i reckon so maybe it's a typo and 240 should have been 204.
Thanks John. My bad, I took some wrong short cuts in my haste. 204 is perfect and if we add Kalule’s 36 fights, we have 240. Didn’t realise Duran already had 73 fights before Leonard. That’s unreal. Apologies to the OP.
Funny looking at such stats. AS IF, like some super comic book character, you immediately inherit all the power and worth of those you vanquish as and when. The numbers are impressive but at least in the case of Hagler, and perhaps also Duran to a degree, timing can be everything. Great fighters with big numbers (min. losses) behind them over many years can be reasonably calculated to be moving ever closer to an eventual loss. Aside from their obvious quality otherwise, as far as their records go, Duran and Hagler were huge scalps. Suffice to say, Monzon made sure that no one “inherited” or “absorbed” his long and hard earned record. He took it away with him, completely.
That must mean Hagler is really overrated. Ray was years away from the sport, a drug addict, got knocked out in sparring against a journey a couple of days before, had undergone serious eye surgery and still spanked that bald man.
Could you elaborate on that sparring incident? I heard/read something like that years back but nothing beyond what you have written. Also, was that supposed to have occurred during one of those fully fledged fights Ray was supposed to have had in the gym against LHs? I doubt he would’ve indulged in same so close to the fight, so this alleged incident, if it did happen, likely occurred in what was supposed to be light sparring?
It was days before the fight, final week of preparation. Quincy Taylor was the sparring partner. As Ray explains here, his game plan was the slug with Hagler, thinking he could bust up Marvin’s scar tissue. After the sparring incident, he changed his plan and decided to box. https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/s...-thank-sparring-partner-hagler-win/100094938/
Leonard has the best collection of wins over a 30 year period. Its the one thing Hagler, Duran and Hearns fan can agree on.Throw in Benitez too.
Fair enough. I didn’t mean to sell him short by using only half his name. How about JT Trouser Snake? That’s even more letters to get tattooed on his Johnson.
SRL didn't spank anyone. Hagler won that fight, despite being past his prime and dumb enough to accept a big ring which suited SRL's running tactics.
