Of course he does. A bigger, younger, stronger just as fast combination throwing, defensively skilled version of the Griffith that came close to beating Monzon.

McCallum and Kalambay were beaten in the ring, lost their titles, Carlos Monzon retired as champion, 14 successful title defenses. Champion from Nov 7 1970 until his retirement on Aug 29 1977. Again fighters fight the best from their own era's not the past or present, what is the matter? You did not like Carlos because he was not flashy loudmouth or he could not speak English. Carlos would beat both Kalambay and McCallum, need I say more, Ha,Ha, LOl.

McCallum and Kalambay were a couple of worthless Bums, now go to sleep, it is past your bed time. You are an amateur, a lightweight who knows nothing about boxing. Stay out of my posts, understood child.

Regardless of how good you think Kalambay is, compared with Griffith, Monzon dismantled the latter in their first encounter; stopping him in the 14th round.

Monzon beat Griffith again, soundly enough on points, in their second meeting - the same year in which, only months earlier, Monzon had been shot twice - in the arm and shoulder.

It's debatable, but the only opponent to give a prime version of Monzon any genuine trouble was Bennie Briscoe, and Kalambay bears no resemblance to him, at all.

So what game-plan and tactics does Kalambay bring to the table, so as to cause Monzon any concerns?

To be particular my description of "comfortably on the decline" doesn't quite match "comfortably over the hill" for me. At any rate he was certainly past his best.

The Valdez wins are excellent. He had to fight hand and fight hard he did. Solid fights.

We will differ on how Nino and Mike compare but we are basically aligned on everything else.

Monzon was a brilliant tactician and very multi faceted without ever shouting it out for the initiated.

I was picturing more over 15, incorrectly. I think Sumbu goes 12 and is a chance of 15 even. I could be wrong and wouldn't spend too much time defending it tho.

    All good JT.
Kalambay could well make it to 12 completed rounds. Few did, mind.

The "names" were climbing up to WW. "Good" fighters at MW existed in other eras too.

You mean climing up from WW don't you and that applies only to Griffith who was actually the number one middleweight contender and had beaten Dick Tiger when he fought Monzon, and Napoles.an ATG Welter, Valdez was a name who went on to win the title, Briscoe was a name who ,without Monzon around may well have been champ, and Benvenuti was a name was he not?
You're just repeating a myth that you've read, the facts do not bear it out.Tonna,Mundine Bogs were all big middles,Bogs and Mundine later fought at lhvy! Most Middleweight champs fought some welters.Lamotta, Graziano,Robinson,Hagler, just to name 4.
Why don't you do some research and get back to us?

"Big middles" with same day weigh ins.
Who challenged once for the MW title.
Briscoe was a perennial challenged. He lost too much for you to assume he would have picked up a title sans Monzon.
Him and Valdez are the two worthwhile names.
    Why don't you?
