You really think Crawford-Spence is breaking any record? No chance. It's not even the biggest fight out there for Crawford which would be Josh Taylor billed as undisputed v undisputed. How has leaving things to his promoter worked out so far for him? Before last night his best win was Viktor Postol, beating a war weary Porter just tops it but he still needs that elite opponent, Spence Taylor even Ugas (for awkwardness) and Charlo would be better than anything yet.
That new blood waiting in wings is why this fight must get done. It's some real monsters waiting their turn.
I really don't believe Spence wants to fight Bud at all which is why he came up with purse split excuses and generally anything to avoid the fight. A fight which the boxing public has wanted for two years at least. One thing is certain, the reason the fight hasn't been made is and was Spence not Bud.
I think that you are reading too much into this, he was disgusted by Kenny Porter stopping the fight and left. He was interview in the parking lot while waiting for his ride, he said it was a good fight but Kenny Porter shouldn't have stopped the fight.
I'm a big Taylor fan, but in no world is Taylor a bigger fight for Bud than Spence - either from a legacy POV or from a monetary sense. That's just crazy. Taylor is high-risk, low-reward for Bud - if he wins, folks will just say that he beat a blown-up 140lber who never fought at 147, and "hadn't really beaten anyone elite anyway" - I've heard that many times already regarding Taylor. If he loses (which I believe is possible, although less so if Taylor doesn't acclimitise to 147 first), then it's a disaster for Bud. If I was Bud i'd be telling Josh to - get in line and prove something at 147 first. If I was Taylor I'd be maneuvering with Arum to try and get straight up and take on Ugas - get a strap, then you get a ton of leverage, and given he is Undisputed the WBA could make him mandatory jsut like Usyk became for AJ. That's a much more winnable fight for Taylor IMO, but he would still get a lot of props for beating Ugas @147. My 2c
And regarding the "mindset" of Spence - for a fighter to come back from that crash, go through physical recovery hell, train hard and look like he hadn't lost much of a step in beating swift Garcia, that tells me pretty much everything i need to know. That dude is NOT scared of Crawford by any stretch of the imagination, and he has insane willpower - lesser dudes would have retired after that crash, especially if there was a fighter they were doubtful about facing.
if taylor beats ugas, it outshines buds debut at welter. both beating a guy who got their strap from pac, but one more proven and refined. advantage taylor. to be honest, i think this will be the easiest scalp for a belt for far into the foreseeable future. if he wants to get a welter belt, nows the time. theres some other killers hunting ugas down too, and its better not to face them just yet.
There's maybe a bit of needle in there that could get that fight made - Ugas was seemingly pissed at Taylor for mentioning a sparring knockdown - which I agree is bad form - what better way to get revenge than taking Taylor's 0 in the ring? On the flipside, if those sparring stories were really true then it might make the Ugas fight harder to make. But then again, wherever you look at 147 if you are Ugas, it's a HARD defence coming up - IIRC Stanionis was made mandatory, and that's no walk in the park, but then there is Ennis and Ortiz looking for a shot as well
i think its in ugas best interest to take the taylor fight. its the one promoters can make the most money with, so they can offer the fighters most. a unified champ with a big european following moving up to challenge for a title will command more international attention than some up and comer vs ugas. and on paper is more winnable. taylor is untested at 147.
He was a little too frustrated with the stoppage, walking out of the arena as fast as he could. It was almost as if he’d hope Porter would win so they could have a face off to build their rematch.
No. If Josh wants a tune-up at the weight sure, otherwise just give him the fight. He’s 140lb’s undisputed champ, not some prospect that has to prove himself.
If Spence does fight again which he says he is he should make the Crawford fight because his body seems to be failing on him after that accident. A near death experience like he had always changes a person mentally and it seems he is also having physical problems occur as time goes on. IMO I think he only has a couple fights left and calls it a career, so he should make the Crawford fight sooner rather then later.
My comments are as follows: 1. I think like many of you Spence was pissed off at what he viewed as a premature stoppage by Kenny Porter because Shawn Porter was doing well and having success. 2. Why should he? He does not like either guy, nor does he particularly respect them. They talk about him all the time, he says little about them. He will deal with them when they fight like he did with Porter. 3. No he already beat Porter so no need to. 4. There are signs Crawford is already past his best in my opinion and that of astute observers like @Pimp C . I know Spence wanted to beat Pacquiao, retire him and take the WBA belt before dealing with Bud. He had 2 fights left at Welterweight and still has 2 fights left. Ugas and then Crawford. As for the crowd booing Spence what do you expect from bumpkins from the back woods of Omaha, Nebraska. Would be surprised if they didn’t! Doubt they would be rooting for Bud in Texas. Spence and his boys along with Leonard Ellerbe came to see the fight and they saw what they needed to see which is Bud struggle against Porter. Styles make fights and Erroll will put Bud in a box. When Bud tries to adjust and switch things up he will get iced. Bank on it. I think the car crash was the most significant issue and we saw how he dealt with Danny Garcia in a way nobody and I mean nobody has dealt with Garcia. Spence will deal with Bud so long as Bud understands the finances that he gets a smaller piece of the pie 35-40% max.
