Do you believe that Prime Mayweather (Mosley fight? Hatton fight?) could go up to 160 lbs and beat the Hagler that SRL fought? Assume that the rules are the same. 12 rounds, bigger ring, etc. I don't see why Mayweather couldn't replicate SRL's strategy and win using his mobility and defense to keep Hagler at bay.

He could have in theory. But given that I’ve never seen Mayweather in a single fight at middle I’m not comfortable saying so with any confidence. Hagler was still dangerous despite his decline

Mayweather would probably pull it off. Leonard wasn’t great when he controversially won and Hagler was no bigger than Canelo. Mayweather had lots of success against southpaws.

Yes. The Hagler of the Leonard fight wouldn't be able to hit him and even if he did, he wouldnt be able to hurt him. It would be extremely close

    A few things to consider:

Floyd was in his absolute prime between LW-LWW.

Theoretically, a WW version of Floyd would have been big enough to have moved up to MW, as Marvin used to weigh-in below 160, back in the days of same weigh-ins.

Marvin would have been a JMW today.

Floyd only fought at JMW 3 times in his entire career.

Although Marvin had declined, he was still extremely dangerous.

Regarding an actual H2H fight, IMHO, it wouldn’t have played out like the ‘Superfight’ of 87.

Floyd would never have been as confident and as offensive minded as what Ray was, where he landed blazing 5-6 punch combinations on Marvin.

Marvin would never have shown Floyd the same amount of respect as what he showed Ray.

Marvin gave away the first 3-4 rounds of the ‘Superfight’ by fighting orthodox. But I don’t believe that he’d have done that against Floyd. I think he’d have fought as a southpaw all night, where he’d have pressed him.

Floyd was one of the greatest fighters of all time. But in threads like this, most people don’t account for the psychological aspect of things. And that would be hugely important here. Although Ray and Floyd were equally as skilled, they were both completely different people, with completely different characteristics. So you simply cannot expect one fighter to replicate what another fighter could do.

If you look at how Floyd carried himself throughout his career, where you look at how cautious he was, you have to seriously ask yourself how realistic this fight would have been. If he wouldn’t fight a prime version of Manny, and he wouldn’t let Canelo weigh-in at 154, then why on earth would anyone think that he’d have taken a fight against Marvin, where he’d have replicated Ray’s strategy. Looking at all of the available evidence that we have, you’d have to conclude that this would have been highly unlikely. But if we assume that the fight would have happened for the sake of the debate, you would have to assume that Floyd would have been extremely cautious. And a cautious Floyd, vs a fighter who wouldn’t have respected his power, would have given you a completely different fight than the one that we saw from 1987.

It doesn’t matter if Marvin was no bigger than Canelo.

That has no relevance at all.

The version of Canelo who Floyd fought was practically the same size as Marcos Maidana. And as we know, all of those fights played out completely differently.

It’s not just the size, it’s the stylistic match ups.

The Canelo fight has zero relevance.

Canelo stood off of Floyd and never pressed him and used his physical advantages.

Marvin would never have done that.

Your post doesn’t make any sense at all.

Of course he’d have been able to have hit him.

Of course he’d also have been able to have hurt him.

Yet if you don’t believe that, then why would it have been extremely close?

The thing with these guys, is that they don’t acknowledge what he did and didn’t do in his own career.

Fantasy fights are cool to debate, but apply some realism on what he actually did and didn’t do in real time.

I know that Floyd has a hardcore fan base, but it just baffles me when they believe that the same guy who wouldn’t fight Canelo at 154, would have fought Marvin AND would also have applied Ray’s same strategy.

    It’s ridiculous.

I only really posted on the thread because I’ve got a bit of free time. Obviously, most other posters have given the thread a miss. And rightly so.

Another point is May Jr. Didn't use his legs the way Leonard did or could, though May Jr. May have been better defensively than Leonard, he wouldn't move as much.
Without the firepower to dissuade Hagler, being more stationary than Leonard and more of a pop-shotter at the higher weights, Mayweather Jr. Wouldn't beat even this version of Hagler simply because he wouldn't be offensive enough.
But as you noted, May Jr. Wouldn't get near a boxing ring with Hagler, even the version that fought Leonard. Whom wasn't as shot as most seem to think, this is done mainly to discredit Leonard's win, most refuse to give credit where credit is due, Hell Duran himself told Leonard he'd beat Hagler after his close lost to him, Hagler was the best Middleweight in history in my opinion, but certain fighters and styles always would given him problems.
