Man that's really close. Never thought about it. Lets see Duran had a lengthy reign as Lightweight Champ for years. Moved up and took Leonard's unbeaten record. But Leonard beat Duran in rematch which Duran failed to go the distance in. Beat Hearns. Beat Benitez. Beat Hagler. Those 3 beat Duran but Duran was out of his best weight class. For Natural skill Leonard. For subtle boxing skills honed over years of training with great trainers Duran. Reminds me of Hopkins and Roy in a way.
He still lost to them. Ray beat all the greats he fought. This is an opinion. This is what the thread asked for. Ray beat greater fighters than Roberto did. So I think he is greater on that criteria. Duran was ferocious, but Ray had the wins which Duran nor Hearns nor Hagler nor Benitez have. 4 times There is my opinon. It is not complicated.
I just feel his rematch v Duran is more complcated because of Ray`s size advantage, a 74 inch reach v 66 inch reach is huge when the bigger fighter has the speed of Leonard, Duran is the best lightweight to fight at welter, I don`t know if rmstrong could have beaten Leonard and I don`t think Whitaker would have, I feel Duran was far better than Whitaker at welter.
It is just an opinion like the thread asks. I have put my opinion on this here for probably 10 years. I always believe who you beat in quality makes you greater or not as great. And Ray has the best win record against top greats than most greats probably. And diverse guys..
