Let me say, I don't know. But I seem to remember that the WBC accused him of PEDS use, then he pulled out of the Hrgovic fight, and now he is stinking it up in a split draw with Jerry Forrest. Is this Hunter minus PEDS? I like the guy and hope that it is not true, but, well, what happened to the guy who drew with Povetkin?
Hunter has never been that good, but he looked particularly bad tonight. Even a 45-year-old Povetkin would have stopped him - let alone Whyte, Parker, Hrgovic, Ortiz, Ruiz etc. The top dogs of the division would have ended him in 2. If it's worth anything, Forrest also failed a test from memory - but he failed for THC... Was Hunter off PEDs? Unsure. Has he gone downhill since the Povetkin fight? Yes. It's also worth noting that Forrest took this fight on short notice. Everything was in Hunter's favour to make quick work of the overmatched Forrest. Turns out I wasn't the only one who thought Forrest was robbed. Eh, his form was pretty consistent for a long period. That'd be a lot of fights to keep up PED use and risk getting caught. Occam's razor says it'd be more suspicious if your form suddenly got significantly better in one fight than in the past.
Can you imagine being a Triller executive watching that? Thinking back on how smart you felt when you learned the guy some thought was the best American HW was languishing and available for you to sign? What a goof this guy turned into.
How about Forrest has been on a roll lately, getting better with each fight, got robbed against Zhilei Zhang, and probably should've won that one by TKO, and Michael Hunter clearly sucks against southpaws.
Zero disputes from this end - but I and the majority of fans expected Hunter to finish the job early and without much effort. From memory, you'd picked Hunter by stoppage to make a statement? Forgive me if not, I may be mixing you up with IB or someone else in the RBR.
Definitely. I expected Hunter to come out guns blazing and try to take him out to make a statement. But I also said this the other day. For what it's worth, I picked Forrest for the upset that he was robbed of against Zhang, based on how good I thought he looked in those other two matches. So I do kind of rate Forrest. This performance didn't shock me in the least.
No, I think Zhang is the same guy that fought Forrest. He looked like a million bucks for the first three rounds against him as well. Then he gassed and was holding on for dear life for the last 5 rounds. Same would probably happen if he fought Hunter, who would wreck him with body blows.
I don't think it was gassing, it genuinely looked as reported like his kidneys were shutting down in the ring.
I don't recall that, only thing I remember is the WBC saying a number of fights were happening without testing during the pandemic and a few fighters were missing tests and Hunter was one of those fighters mentioned who had missed a test and that boxers and promoters were getting lax in their anti doping protocols. I don't think it was Hunter minus PED's more likely Hunter minus desire. Signing for a new outfit like Triller for the money and leaving a powerful and well connected promotional company like Matchroom suggests Hunter may have lost the desire to prove himself a top heavyweight anymore and is only in it for the money. He's going nowhere with Triller they don't have the promotional clout to get him meaningful fights let alone a title shot. I have to question how much Hunter really wants it anymore with his recent choices and now this poor performance.
I believe Hunter was on some type of PED when he was at cruiser What happened to the cult following he had? The "Hunter is the best at heavyweight but don't watch him nearly get stopped by Usyk who let off" squad
His cult following is strange. Hunter did a Bellew before Bellew (move up to HW to avoid the likes of Briedis, Gassiev etc.) https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/michael-hunter-jr%E2%80%99s-professional-career-simplified.673236/
No, looked like Hunter just didn't put the work in, either on his conditioning (the reason for the puking incident?) or on his gameplan. Or maybe he was fighting sick (another possibility for the reason he barfed). Anyway, I'm willing to chalk it down to a bad night at the office, but obviously he needs to step it up big time in his next performance or he's going to go down in a lot of people's estimations. Plus Jerry Forrest is an underrated and awkward journeyman stroke fringe contender who's given a number of fighters problems in the past. So perhaps a combination of awkward opponent, poor conditioning and possibly fighting sick . Dunno. More to emerge in the coming weeks perhaps.
I think i know the issue with hunter last night but i wont post it because its a touchy subject with many people right now. Ill give a hint…its not a ped but it also goes into the body.
