I like what Shavers said about when he knocked Larry down. He said he was champ for 5 seconds, going through the whole thing in his head, and then Larry got up and did not look happy. Shavers said he then thought to himself "... gonna be a long night." lol

You called it. It was definitely a knockdown. Larry was in serious trouble, his flu made it so he should never have entered the ring that night.

It’s maybe my favorite heavyweight championship fight to watch. Drama, skill, boxing, slugging … it had everything.

Page had a superb right hand. It can be seen on full display against the likes of Monroe, Ward, LeDoux, Tillis and Coetzee. With an 81" reach and heaps of hand speed it was quite a dangerous punch.None other than Ed Schuyler said in 1983 it belonged with Coetzee's as the best in the division.

Here's what Michael Spinks said about sparring some of the heavyweights -

“I hit Tex Cobb and he told me, “You had me blinkin’ there, buddy,;” laughs Michael. “He said I put a dip in his knees. “I worked with Witherspoon in ’82 and I did fairy well. I did extremely well, to tell you the truth. He knew I was there and I got respect. I was impressed with my performance.”

“I’d have to say Page gave me more problems than the other two. He’s just too big. He tried to hurt me. I landed some good punches, but Page just had too much body. Between Witherspoon and Page, I don’t think Witherspoon hits as hard as Page.”

Lastly have a look at Page demolishing Evangelista. The first right hand he actually lands while going backwards and just have a look at the impact. He then bombs him out with a right hand around his guard. He'd lasted 7 with Larry, 5 with Spinks and then 2 with Page. It was an impressive display of right hand power. Evangelista beat Snipes a couple of years later.

Wasn't your quote of mine here from the Joe Louis thread? So this entire thread is what, an attempt to get leverage over my opinion? I have to admit tho we all love a good spin off thread!

Regarding your sentence above i genuinely have absolutely no idea at all what it actually means. It makes zero sense sorry.

Dictator like questions don't really fly for me. A certain poster used to throw these agenda laden yes or no things out by the dozen.

The truth is the question is impossible to answer. Probably not a single bomb as hard as such but he landed multiple hard punches in a very short time span and Louis shook it off stat before launching a hellcat offensive of his own to have Baer struggling to survive the round. Punches don't have to be thrown from the second row at ringside to be enormously powerful. Baer is widely considered to be one of the hardest right hand hitters in history. ESPN had him at #10 and Shavers #6 as an example. Some, including George i believe have him at the top even now.

Here's Tillis, hardly known for pinnacle level durability surviving an atomic bomb from Shavers -

What you find "ramblin" 99% will find precise and very easy to follow. I'll dumb it down. You claimed Earnie was old when he dropped Tillis and i explained power is the last to go. This is simple boxing 101 that has been accepted for almost a century. I then provided proof he still hit damn hard at a point when you were trying to fob his power off by way of him dropping Joe Bugner not long before the fight with Tillis. It all went hand in hand.

Labeling Galento a "circus brawler" is completely misrepresenting his actual effectiveness. Sure he was crude and fat but he was tough and he could punch. Just because he wasn't a body beautiful for you doesn't mean the man couldn't whack or find a home for it. Tyhe guy got to #2 in the ranking even if helped by Louis decimating contender after contender after contender. Shaver a "professional soundly looking boxer"? Earnie could get as ugly as they come at times.

Christ when he dropped Tillis above he ended up flying past the falling Tillis on his huge follow through and ending up facing no-one for a split second. Here have a look at a "professionally soundly looking boxer" attempts to finish Holmes. Take particular note at the 26 second mark. Galento's not looking so bad now!!!

As for Snipes technically he was all over the place and this was well documented during his time. As long as they have those heavier muscular modern looking bodies tho of course.

Absolutely. Both had fantastic recuperation and great heart. If in your opinion Holmes did it against better fighters and harder punchers then go ahead and mark him that way. Louis was stopped once across a 17 year and 68 fight span. He'd dogged it in training and took dozens and dozens of right hands against a top right hand puncher. He was pre peak and had not yet won a title. He beat the best of a couple of era's.

You can list whatever tickles your fancy. Absolutely. I rate Holmes a 9.0 and Louis an 8.5 overall. I have Holmes edging it on the suspicion he did beat a couple of more dangerous fighters. Holmes lot however was hardly a murders row and he avoided the most dangerous comp for the last 2-3 years of his reign.

Never seen a boxer recover from a shot like that. ( Shavers} Absolute cannon flush to the head , jaw ,and brain. Amazing. Got up --still hurt but persevered. Scary how tough he was.

Tyson Fury got up from an equally murderous shot in his first fight with Wilder.

That was a monumental rise. He looked done and Wilder's eyes near popped out of his head. He had to regroup as well LOL

He was no Chuvalo in the chin dept but his skills were so great few could reach it consistently to put him down Shavers, Snipes dropped him and finally Tyson was able to finish him. Holmes had a good chin but his heart was a 10+ and so was his boxing IQ

I'm still shocked the ref didn't stop it, Fury was completely unconscious.

And I remain a bit skeptical that the ref let it go on after the second knockdown in the third fight.

Fury was a lot better in that third fight tho even given the second KD. I don't think he was remotely close to stopping it. The second KD was bizarre really as he still had leg problems but he came out fine next round.

It was brilliant refereeing letting that first fight go on when most watching thought that was it. One of the greatest resurrections ever.

To me the ref could have stopped it in the 12th with little complaint from either fans or commentators. He really was out.

It surely it quite the tribute to Fury that he got up, I think he was hurt significantly worse than Holmes vs. Shavers.

It would have passed for sure particularly if he stopped it instantly and crouched over him keeping him from trying to get up. Fury still had 2 minutes to get through in that round and there he was 30 seconds later taunting Wilder with both hands behind his back! Incredible.

Yes he was further gone than Larry which makes it all the more freakish.
