Conor Benn takes on Chris Algieri this Saturday in a contest many fight fans view as a foregone conclusion in favour of Benn. However I class Algieri as a very live dog in this fight and think we could see an upset unless Algieri is truly washed/Benn has made significant adjustments from the Granados fight. Firstly, Algieri is a slick boxer mover and it is clear from the Granados fight that while Benn carries pop his movement/ability to cut the ring off is crude at best. If this remains the case there is a good chance Algieri can utilise his superior movement to weather the early storm and outpoint Benn as he did against Provodnikov. Many are also pointing to Algieri's age as a sign of decline but he is a young 37; he's only had 28 pro fights and lives the life of a consummate professional, working on the side as a nutritionist and always coming into fights in great shape. He has also, of course, fought in much bigger fights and at much higher levels than Benn. Personally I don't see Benn being able to stop Algieri but certainly any close rounds will be scored in his favour so he'll probably get a dodgy decision. Thoughts?
The cards have probably already been written and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Algieri just quits on his stool late on, further adding to the myth that Conor is a destroyer.
Algieri has no chance IMO. This is like his fourth fight in three years. He’s basically a semi retired pundit these days and was genuinely working as Danny Jacobs’ chef during his fight camps. This is not a serious fighter anymore. Everything you posted is basically the spin that Hearn wants the fans to buy into for this fight. It could have genuinely been written by a Matchroom employee to make the case for Algieri. Benn is a lot better than some people are making out. For me he is levels above Algieri right now physically and boxing wise.
He hasn't fought at welterweight in 6 years and has fought once in the last 2.5 years so it's a typical Benn opponent.
He might live the life in terms of keeping in decent shape but he's not been active in the ring and fully dedicated to the sport. Coyle gave him some problems a little while back and I think at this point, with Benn being a young hungry upstart, he'll be taking Algeiri's scalp.
Algeri isn't coming here to win and nobody can convince me otherwise. Let's be honest, what does Algeri gain from winning? Nothing.
It's a setup fight. As in setup for beating a former world champ, Look he's beaten a former world champion (fringe at best), this guy went the distance with Pac - Can you image if Benn gets a stoppage? It's a terrible fight but nice matching making for the hype machine. Benn should probably win based on youth and activity. Algeri at his best was game and no push over but I can't see him doing much after 3 or 4 rounds here and he was never a puncher.
I like this fight for benn for where he is at the moment, you throw him in with any of the top welters or even some of the unheralded fringe contenders like kavaliauskas, butaev,he will get beat.wouldnt be surprised if it ends up a hard night for benn if Algieri has still got some professional pride.
Tommy coyle who was done at the time also. On a side note Tommy coyle podcast with tris Dixon is a great listen seems a really decent guy
Algieri is a good guy but cmon been years since faced top tier and isn't fully active in this game anymore as others have said it's a perfect opportunity opponent to hype him up but lets face it even the up and coning welters will take him apart. Jaron Ennis and vergil ortiz would wipe him out never mind top tier guys
All of Conor Benn's recent opponents have been brought in with 2 things in mind. The first been are they dangerous to Benn? Therefore, no concussive punchers and no physically superior fighters. The second thing they need to have is a good host of names who they have fought in years gone by. Formella - went 12 with Porter so that can be thrown into every interview but he offers no threat to Benn. Vargas - great names on his resume, Garcia, Spencer Jr, Khan, Ortiz Jr. Throw these into interviews and you trick people into thinking Vargas is a live opponent. Granados - see Vargas. Algieri - see Vargas and Granados. It's a well rehearsed routine now and if you can throw World title challenger or former world champion in there you're laughing, it won't be changing anytime soon.
Completely agree with the nature of the matchmaking - it definitely raises concerns as to Benn's chin/heart. Also interesting that Hearn explicitly says Benn isn't ready for Ava as opposed to putting some spin on why they won't fight yet. All I'd say is I feel Algieri is considerably better than Granados and will throw more volume. If Benn fails to cut the ring off again I can see Chris nicking rounds (at least from an objective standpoint, but I'm sure the judges will see otherwise). Good points raised above in other posts r.e. working with Danny Jacobs/general inactivity. I think those saying he's not coming to win are making an unfair inference . Winning = big money rematch, a swansong win towards end of career, derailing a hype train, etc. Plenty of reasons to be motivated if he's in right headspace.
