Gomez, points. gomez held those hands high and brought them back nicely. Toney needs a guy that brings their hands back low and slow to land his counters. The gomez jab is the most effective punch in the fight and scores the points.
At one point I believe Toney was offered a title shot against Gomez and turned it down so he could fight Jirov instead which was a more favorable matchup for him. I believe Gomez had the type of style to give James problems with his speed and excellent footwork. JT was at his best against bangers or swarmers that would stand in front of him and get countered to death and Gomez wasn't that guy. I would take Gomez by decision based on his speed. He was one hell of a cruiserweight champ that really never got the recognition that he deserved at that weight. When he moved to heavyweight he never really looked right at the weight and became more of a plodded. Bad management really stunted his career which is something that happens to a lot of Cuban fighters.
Yeah Toney takes this by close decision. Gomez is overrated. Did not really beat anybody great. I remember he struggled with 40 plus year old Mc call and got knocked by a bum at heavyweight.
I definitely agree that Toney is a far greater fighter but I don't like the matchup for him at 190 against Gomez. At that point in JT's career he wasn't facing guys that moved like Gomez did at 190. You are absolutely correct that Gomez looked like **** at Heavyweight but at 190 he was a bad dude and a tough match up with his speed and 80 inch reach. On another note, if anyone wants to see an outstanding amateur fight, you can find Gomez vs Tarver on YouTube. I would post it but I can't figure out how to do it on my new phone.
At heavyweight James knocks his ass out. At cruiser would be a close fight if the fight is outside Germany (and out of the hands of the corrupt German promoter)
Gomez never even came close to losing on the cards anywhere near his prime other against Vitali. Unless you think the Yanqui Diaz fight is some sort of baseline measurement for Gomez's talent level, Toney would be in deep **** at heavy or cruiser.
He never beat anybody great either. He struggled with the likes of Mc Call and Dominguez twice. He got knocked out by a novice. At heaavweight his limitations became obvious.Let’s face it, Toney would have been his best win.
He didn't struggle with McCall and Dominguez. Toney never beat a good mover when he went up in weight.
He did.Gomez never beat anybody as good as Toney.Gomez never moved much, I do not know where you get that from. You are relying on boxrec, I watched his fights at the time
If you are referring to Yaqui Diaz as a novice you are flat out wrong. Diaz was a on the Cuban national team and not a novice. It's fine if you think Toney would win. I don't agree but I have no problem with you having that opinion. Just be accurate.
Gomez beats Toney at cruiserweight... he was a very good fighter just not meant to be a heavyweight... cant remember if Gomez fought at just 190 or if he was around during the 200 pound time..
