You can't be stripped of a belt that does not exist. Fury beat The Man and remained The Man until he officially retired, which he never did.
He announched his retirement and was banned for a prohibited substance. Crazy thing is that actually he should have been banned at the time he won this myhical "lineal" title, but the Brits retroactively set the date not at the time he tested positive (Hammer eliminator fight), but slightly after he won the Wlad fight (otherwise both would have been a NC). Basically from 2016 to 2020 there was no "lineal" champion... Not that it matters anyway, because the whole lineal thing has been the most debated fictional championship in modern history. The rules are completely unclear, "experts" completely disagree if and when lineages are established and broken, and sometimes even who the lineal champion actually is. Retirements, comebacks, injuries, ranking disagreements, bans, ducks, prison time, 1 vs 2 never fighting, politics, and much more... it all muddies the water so much that it holds very little value nowadays. Less as a WBA regular belt even imo.
The lineal title isnt real. It is just opinion. So while I greatly respect it, there is no recognized organization or panel that dictates it. People disagree on who is lineal, if a fight qualifies for filling a vacant lineal, or if someone has met the qualifications for being stripped of the lineal title. Many used to point to The Ring Magazines guidelines for the lineal title. In which Tyson Fury was stripped for more than one reason.
"Been very blessed in my life and career achieve the upmost in boxing. "[It] was an epic journey along the way. "Thanks to all the fans that supported and believed in me along the way. "Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did." He then signed off the message with "the end".
I agree that Fury’s lineage became invalid when he announced retirement, albeit very briefly. Then there was also the part where he was suspended for drugs. If Wilder and Joshua fought each other in 2017 or 2018, they could’ve started a new lineage. But, both The Ring and TBRB had him and Wilder #1 and #2 going into their rematch so Fury has a more than valid claim for lineage now too.
Sullivan, Corbett and Fitzsimmons were all retired during parts of their title reigns. If you're going to have a standard like that, it'd need to be applied consistantly. The lineage is basically just a tradition, so you can create an alternative version if you like though.
Because he came back and remained unbeaten. Can't actually remember if he was put up as the lineal champion against Seferi or if that waited until Wilder but it wasn't really mentioned anywhere else in the 3-year interregnum either.
Some boxing people prefer the whole "man who beat the man" title to be more prestigious than any of the alphabet titles.
but that line gets broken all the time, it means squat other than its connection to previous holders. it has no relevancy to who is actually better.
