Best win: Nonpareil Jack Dempsey. Historical: James J. Corbett. Impressive: Gus Ruhlin. I would probably add an underrated win to this. I think his win over Creedon is very impressive.
Creedon is very underrated. In some ways McCoy's first win is even more impressive, though Creedon was starting to decline by then. Fitzsimmons is the type of fighter you'd expect could blast away Creedon, while McCoy is the type of fighter you'd expect someone like Creedon to give nightmares.
There is film on youtube showing Ruhlin fight against Jeffries. He looks terrible, a club fighter at best.
The only film showing Ruhlin is from the last round against Jeffries when he was hurt and tried to run from Jeffries. I don't think that's a good representation of how he fought.
Yeah, it’s actually Mike Leonard v Jack Cushing, 1894, the first fight filmed and it was captured in Edison’s Black Maria studio. 6 x 1 minute rounds. Only about 38 secs of the orig. film remains. Leonard is listed on boxrec with fights around the same time period. Cushing is listed as having one fight in 1900. Neither record lists this match which was obviously just an exhibition for the cameras. It was never played off as being Fitz - that’s just an uploader’s spin. There is a reproduction of Fitz v Jeffries using actors - it’s also available on YouTube.
