Usyk Josh Taylor Canelo Loma Kambosos Gotta be one of those 5 surely? Some other notable performances.. ageing Roman Gonzales pushing Estrada razor close, perennial warrior Kiko flatlining Barry, Sandor Martin abusing Garcia & a near 40 yr old Donaire still doing his thing .. any more examples? Happy retirement Manny too
Usyk had an incredible performance but only one fight this year unfortunately. Canelo has three fights, one easy against Yldirim and two against undefeated title holders. All won by KO. Let's not forget Donaire who quite easily beats an undefeated title holder and an undefeated top 10. In addition, he is 39 years old. I think I would choose Donaire but I think it will go away for Canelo.
I think Canelo on quantity and Usyk on quality. It's a bit hard to guage as covid has hampered activity for many meaning we have to judge of one fight only.
Pretty clear that it's Canelo. Nonito is close and did a lot, basically a new renaissance in the twilight of his career but it was more of a quiet conquest. Canelo was a Las Vegas billboard of accomplishment.
I nearly added him, but then I thought no, and then I thought yes, and then I thought no again, but seeing as you pointed it out.. no.
Usyk for me - barring a few of the more astute students of the game - all I was seeing on this board was that Usyk was too small, too puny, wouldn't last 8 rounds with AJ, would be walked down, has no power etc etc. Now unified HW champ after being undisputed Cruiser, emulating Holyfield (who was only 3-belt era undisputed CW). Usyk not only beat AJ, but was dominant to the point of almost getting a late stoppage, and that nearly everyone has jumped aboard his hype train and now gives AJ next to no chance in the proposed rematch! While I applaud Canelo for fighting more actively than most fighters, he still did pretty much what he was expected to do - neither a rusty Saunders (a career 160lber) or Plant were huge threats to Canelo IMO, and getting undisputed in a wasteland 168 - it's an achievement, but is it really all that?
Usyk and Kambosos. You have to give it to an underdog this year. Both guys fought great and their wins were not flukes. Fat Andy’s first win against AJ is an example of a fluke. AJ proved it in the rematch. Kambosos was more of an upset although he was fighting a guy his own weight and size. Usyk beat a giant in his backyard. Kambosos also beat Teo in his backyard. I’d be cool with George getting the award but my vote would go to Usyk because the size disparity was so great in their fight and most people counted him out. Kambosos was an underdog because most people weren’t familiar with his skill level. Looking back, ‘21 wasn’t the best year for boxing but we did get to see some good fights. Hope ‘22 is even better.
Usyk. Beating and dominating AJ is a better win than Yldrim, Saunders, and Plant combined. HW is the king of divisions.
Puleeze! Plant is bang average and has fought trash, BJS 2.0 has fought trash at 168 and looked like trash at that weight, and Yildirim is trash. And both Plant and BJS 2.0 fights were very competitive even though Clenelo has the most stacked deck in the game and BJS 2.0 (KO 45%), Plant (KO 54%), an Yildirim (KO 46%) are featherfists and they all clearly suffered from stage fright fighting on a stage of that magnitude for the first time. BJS 2.0 was fighting in a stadium of 73,126 crazed doe-eyed Mexican teenybopper Clenelo fangirls and gypsy haters baying for his blood And Plant had 16,586 of them against him too Usyk schooling the crap out of AJ, who has the second most stacked deck in the game behind Clenelo, in the lion's den of his backyard in front of at least 65,000 rowdy AJ fanatics and pissed up yobs whilst giving away massive physical advantages against a savage punching KO artist unified three-belt champ colossus who even now after the loss still sports a fearsome KO 84% is infinitely more impressive. The answer you're looking for here gentleman is Usyk and he will win it in a sane and just world.
