Who was the most unbeatable at a weight class?

If i had to pick someone to fight for my savings it would be SRR at 147.

Duran at 135 wouldn't be far behind.

I'd worry that Charles might topple Jones at 168. You could probably argue post war Charles could make 168 and it could well be his greatest weight H2H.

I would agree Gomez would be damn hard to topple at 122. A smokey would be Jofre who would be quite comfortable there.

Charles at 175 would be hard but there's a couple of tough matches there too.

 

Jofre said if 122 was available in his days that’s the division he would have settled in. I imagine he’d have probably moved up around 1962. I believe he’d beat Gomez. Tough fight, but better defensively and more durable, and there’s be a lot of bombs thrown in that fight.

 

He never lost at 135, his loss to DeJesus was an over the weight non title fight . Duran's people knew to keep him out of trouble he needed to fight often. Why they let Duran fight someone as great as DeJesus when he wasn't fit is a mystery

 

As mentioned, to not call the fight a Lightweight contest is splitting hairs...


When the title was on the line, Duran got the job done twice, but back at the time of the first fight, DeJesus was at least, the better Lightweight that night.

Your right it was an over the weight match, and from the reports Duran came in at 137 so not that much over 135, which doesn't suggest ( unless you have read differently ) that he was out of shape or not fit, just a friendly nudge mate. keep well.

 

To also not split hairs then, we live in the post modern era, there are no facts, only interpretations of the abstract.

I've no drama with that take. Wilfredo was a huge fish in a pretty small pond let it be said. Amazing fighter tho. What a battle it would be.

 

Yeah, Gomez was extraordinary, but Jofre was just a notch above.

Jofre was the perfect fighter. People love talking about P4P. It gets ridiculous. But Jofre fits the bill than any other fighter ever.

 

You really think he beats Walker and Leonard? Watching him on film, I don't think so. I also don't buy into the yarn that he was better than Ww than at Mw. He was really a Junior Middleweight. But since that division didn't exist, people like to stress he was a small Middleweight by saying Welterweight was his best weight class. But he was already competing at Middleweight before he even won the Ww championship. And he only returned to Ww intermittently to defend the strap.

I think Walker runs him over, and SRL, conversely, out-boxes him from behind the jab.

I am incredulous to either claim, as these weren't just great fighters, but men who sought out challenges they didn't need to. I would assume they didn't meet because the timing wasn't right. But I have heard both rumors. I doubt them, but you seem like someone who might be able to clear up the smoke for good.
