Probably because Roy Jones was prime there in the 1990s.

 

Dzo Calzaghe was prime there in the 2000s.

 

Easily Jones at 168. I'd actually give Arguello and Chavez a fair chance against Floyd at 130, and the likes of Williams and Whitaker would certainly give Duran something to think about at 135 whereas i don't think anyone even get's particularly close to RJJ at 168. Can't see anyone beating SRR at 147 either.

Actually, technically, that non-title fight was a coupla pounds over 135, so technically, it was a junior welter fight.

Roy wasn’t at SMW for long, but he barely lost rounds whilst he was there.

Joe was great, but he never looked unbeatable.

He barely beat Robin Reid, in a fight which was sandwiched between Reid’s 2 losses to Silvio Branco and Thulani Malinga.

He had a tough night against Sakio Bika.

He looked awful against David Starie and Ricky Thornberry, although I believe that he was injured.

He was dropped by Byron Mitchell, which was a joke of a stoppage.

He was dropped by a European level fighter called Kabary Salem.

He didn’t always put in performances like the masterclass against Lacy.

He never looked as great as what Roy did when they were both at their best.

Though no fighter is " unbeatable " these are the fighters I believe head to head against any fighter of the weight class, and in their primes and focused they probably beat anyone they face at that weight limit. Some weight classes had many top shelf fighters it's hard to pick just one.

 

Chris, I met Ken and Tommy Buchanan when Ken was inducted in the World Boxing Hall of Fame about 20 years ago (met Carlos too). I was enjoying their company and their stories but those 2 Scots were pros at trying to con people out of drinks and I wouldn't bite. But there was a story they regaled me with that I loved. It was in NY (it may have been the Duran fight) and present at the weigh-in was NYSAC Edwin Dooley. Now Dooley was this type of guy where he had to be front and center for pictures. The vanity on this guy was palpable. Anyways Ken is on the scale and Dooley is butting in wanting to be the one to announce the weight and he's pushing his way in through the crowd and announces Ken's weight as, "Buchanan, 143!" A weight that perked up every ear with the realization that the world title fight is off. But then Tommy said, "I had to whisper to him, 'Ed, could you get your arm off Ken's shoulder?'" Apparently Dooley's leaning body added a few pounds to Ken until the balance beam properly settled out at 135. Too funny.

 

He wasn’t unbeatable on the grounds that he never lost.

That was at LHW against a shot version of Roy Jones.

Again, Joe never looked unbeatable, even when in his prime.

 

Real good pick, but remember Spinks didn't have a lot of fights, so there were a couple fighters he didn't get. Plus he kind of came in at the end of that tight light heavyweight explosion. At his weight, think that Charles, Moore, and potentially Foster have a strong chance of beating Michael.
