Quarry. He'd have easily picked up a belt if he wasn't from such a strong era.

    For his era Joe Chonyski.

For any era unlimited weight, probably Ibeacucchi, although we didn't get to see him fight a real super heavy.

Never really had a career defining win imo. Lost against almost every big name (even non champions) he faced.

He had a chance to pick up a belt against Jimmy Ellis, a blown up middleweight.
I don't think that should be seen as an exceptionally tough break.

I thought he almost certainly outworked an aged Patterson and was unlucky not to get the decision against Mathis. It's been a while, but I also remember having the Quarry fight as even before the strange ending.

Ellis was an excellent fighter at his peak. Beat a ton of excellent opposition. That being said I like Quarry but I can think of several I’d have over him

Quick, I really like George and think he at least belongs on a list for consideration on this subject. However, in regards to the Mathis fight, I don't think there was any doubt that Mathis won that fight. I personally scored it 9-1-2 for Mathis on the NY rounds basis and the officials scores were similar. Perhaps you're thinking of another fight. I do think the Patterson fight was one of his best showings and anyone he fought from that era was ending up with sore ribs.
