That's what I was getting at earlier. 1-2 fights a year for (say) 5 years, so 10 more bouts at most. Not all of those will be great nights, some of them might well end up being comebacks of some kind and if things went well, some might end up being routine. Let's say he gets past Usyk and deals with Fury and/or Whyte if they're still there; what then? Joyce, Hrgovic later on maybe, then what next? I reckon he'd bow out if that all played out. If not then he's maybe a bit busier in between, tidying things up at worst. AJ's fan base means every time he fights is an event. They're not all great nights in the sport by a long way.
Go and watch the Fury v Wilder trilogy programme on BT Sports 2 tonight at 6.45pm for 1 hour and contrast both warriors with 'Why do I feel like a chicken Robb'
Even if AJ should lose again to Usyk (what many thinks) Eddie Hearn / Matchroom can give him a couple of rebuilding fights and then he would be ready to face Fury. Keep in mind that there are 2 major networks / platforms (Sky, DAZN + some others) that are currently fighting for AJ's signature. If AJ is smart he plays them against each other. The money will be too big for him not to continue his boxing career the next 4 - 5 years, but time will tell.
I think people miss the point. Lets say we stop ppv overnight. Straight away most promoters lose interest...a lot of joshuas, furies and chisoras pick something else to make money in because the oppertunity is only really for the select few...the rest are scrabbling for an up in the air payday. The truth is boxings a hard enough sport without taking the investment away. These ppv cards are more inclusive nowadays....different names getting paydays down the card. Getting paid decent money as well. Without the ppv how much are they getting paid. Even look at whyte and chisora....they have reinvested some of that moneyback into training camps etc...made them better fighters more able to compete with the rest. No ones saying their world beaters....but their both better than they would have been. Bigger better teams etc. Take the names out of the equation....the chances of being anthony joshua making the crazy money is about 80 million to 1. Hes the very select few. The guys under making that sort of money are also again the select few. What about not the select few. Is it a mugs game for everyone but the select few. The argument comes down to this...stop investing in it and it will just get worse. Someone needs to invest....they wont. Will you. If not and no one invests can people really see it getting better. I really think the argument should be about taking something from the pot to reinvest in lower level boxing...thats whst yhe boxing fan should be arguing over. Rather than campaigning for something thst wont work...even tho it sounds good and we,d all save money.
Haye Bellew 1 did 1.5 million buys. Bellew Haye 2 also did over a million. Even Usyk Bellew did 800k somehow when Usyk wasn't known by the UK public. This led to Hearn putting PPV after PPV after PPV for non Joshua fights. It seems like PPV has dipped recently though. Joshua did less than a million buys against Pulev, and just a tinge over a million against Usyk. I wouldn't be surprised if Benn Broner happens in the UK if it's on PPV. That would fail miserably. Could do less than 15k buys like Brook Jennings.
Never spent 1p on a PPV and never will - people are getting mugged time and again. PPV should only be for non subscribers to Sky Sports or BT Sports when fights are PPV - those are our monthly investments and quite substantial. It is obscene that a non elite Heavyweight called Joshua has earned hundreds of millions and British Level Puddings Whyte and Chisora an estimated £50m and £30m respectively. There is no 'investment' going back to grass roots - these puddings sail off into the sunset with their PPV Loot
Lets be really honest tho jurgen....that sky sports budget goes mainly on football and sports like that. Boxing is way down the list on the sky sports budget. Thats where the problem lies boxing isnt all that well supported hence why they,ve had to create beefs, throw money at promoting it. Storylines etc. The numbers dont lie....their not gonna allocate big money into a sport that doesnt have enough viewers. Therefore if your hoping on sky picking up the bill on say the next chisora fight....the budgets not gonna be great. So chisoras dedicated himself from young...possibly gonna end up brain dead. Might be killed in the ring. Be one of the few guys that have a boxing career thats worthwhile because most fail. Years of wear and tear over the years hard sparring etc. Competed against fury, klitchko, whyte, parker, usyk. Beat takam. Beat an olympic gold medalist. Put a lot of money into training camps and you give him 100,000 pound. Even whyte....whytes beat some good names. Chisora twice, parker, helenius, rivas fought joshua. And he gets at best 100,000. Pays his tax on that. Pays his coaches/training camps/expenses. Whats he left with. Lets say sky sports pays half a million between them. They gonna really pay half a million each time. Take off their expenses. This is where the problem lies........they look over to jordan henderson. You,ll know him jurgen. A half decent footballer by no means a superstar has a net worth of £55 million quid. Go look at every other sport....almost every one of them are all on big money. Not just the superstars. From golf to darts to tennis to football. Check them all out. The problem you,ll have is the hardest sport of them all will be on the lowest by far. It just wouldnt work...it sounds good but the reality is sport is big business nowadays. If you want boxing to continue to grow till it may be able to stand on its own two feet...it needs investment. No different to what a lot of big businesses do. Dazn for example. Otherwise it will just end up a race to the bottom. Thats the reality. No one really wants to invest. The fans have been asked to pick up the bill. The other scenario is chisora ends up with a career total of 800,000 and jordan henderson 55 million. A darts player ends up with 8 million. A golf player 50 million. Ufc 40 million. Boxer 800,000. Somethings not adding up. Also add into how many guys have been paid on ppv platforms. Not the top guys but the guys down the card. The cards are getting bigger more guys in boxing are getting paid pretty well...it keeps them going. Hearns put big cards on. Franks put big cards on. Dazn big cards. Take away the ppv....do many people want to watch two guys they,ve never heard of on sky sports. The stands to reason they get paid much less. How long before these guys chuck the towel in. Kill the ppv,s...the knock on effect is much bigger than just affecting your top guys.
bbjc back on the copy and paste again. Simply put, he believes that the likes of Chisora would not box if he were not to be offered millions in PPV loot. The truth is, he would box and he would box more regularly, which is a shame because boxing would probably be better off without him.
The guys fought klitchko, fury twice, parker twice, whyte twice, usyk, pulev, price, helenius, david haye, takam. Had 44 fights and you want him to fight more. 44 training camps. You ever seen chisora sparring. Everyones telling chisora to call it a day because hes took too much damage but safin wants to see him box more regularly over the years. Its probably a miracle chisoras not brain damaged already and possibly will end up in years to come....but you want to see more. I cant get my head round that. This is exactly why people take what a lot is said from boxing fans with a pinch of salt.
Agree with the Football salaries being obscene but the Sky boxing budget may be increased if better cards and fights were on to attract more viewers. The dross shown by Matchroom was not just down to budget, the one sided pony was their strategy to kill Sky Sports Boxing and get people to buy Sky Box Office after being starved of decent fights. I have seen absolute pony fights on Sky Box Office where both fighters were being paid millions and I have seen great fights on channel 5 where fighters where paid in the low thousands. Check out the Dilmaghani v Ziana fight if you missed it and you will find it very difficult to watch a better 12 rounds in any arena. Compare this to dross such as Joshua v Parker or Takam etc.
