He's not a light puncher he's just undersized for the division (more a natural 168 pounder) campaigning in a division where almost everyone he faces is significantly bigger than him and you also have to factor in the durability of some of the fighters he's fought in recent years who've lasted the distance against him Pascal is crazy tough and even though he's fought everyone and their dog he has only been stopped twice and that was by a Kovalev who was still in his prime and whose power was terrifying back then. And even then he only hit the canvas once and was stopped on his feet or in his corner. That version of Kovalev's shots sounded like gun shots Chilemba who, again, has fought everyone and their dog, and has only been stopped once, on an injury against Gvozdyk Joe Smith Jr. who has never been stopped or floored legitimately. The stoppage he incurred earlier on in his career was due to him suffering a broken jaw and he was in agony. If you doubt Smith's toughness and mental fortitude go watch his fight against Sullivan Barrera. He actually fractured his jaw in sparring a few weeks before and it went in the second round after Barrera cracked him good on it. The most impressive thing about that for me is Smith courageously fought on and managed to last the distance despite knowing the hell that awaited him after the fight because he'd already been through it once before Suffering a broken jaw during a fight isn't only meant to, obviously, be extremely painful but having your jaw wired shut for six weeks is by all accounts meant to be extremely tough both mentally and physically and he actually lost about 40lbs in weight the first time How many times has Pascal officially even been down? Twice IIRC and one was a balance issue after he, as he does, loaded up like a lunatic and threw himself over as a punch landed How many times has Chilemba been down? Against the savage punching Kovalev and twice against the hard punching Vlasov Smith has never been down officially And I don't think Salamov or Richards have either albeit I could be wrong He hurt Smith and dropped Lenin Castillo All of the aforementioned are significantly bigger (heavier) than him Some of you may remember that Roy and Kellerman had a debate on air during one of his fights regarding who the harder puncher was out of him and Kovalev which is ridiculous because it's not close. IIRC Roy argued Bivol hit harder or it might be the other way round I'm not saying he's a power puncher. He isn't. But he can crack a bit when he wants to and is far from being a light hitter This content is protected
He's just so boring to watch, it is a safety first approach that means he will never be a major star. The fight with Beterbeast needs to happen 2022 or not at all.
Bivol has decent power. He just suffers from the same syndrom as Demetrius Andrade, they are content with doing enough to win. They just don’t give a **** about putting on a show.
Canelo beats Bivol There's only one rhytmn and tempo to Bivol's work and if you can time it, he's gone.
I don't think that he is boring. He looks like an artist painting a masterpiece when boxing, has beautiful movements and combinations.
Bivol is not only too small, he’s also not good enough. Boxing fans go nuts over a guy who looks technically correct and straightforward. He’s neat to watch. He’s also neat and straightforward for opponents. There’s nothing to him, he’s not elite. There’s nothing to indicate that he is. He was a nothing amateur so we can’t look to elite competition. He’s had no elite competition at any level. Canelo and Beterbiev walk straight through someone like that. Even at his natural weight class (168) I wouldn’t expect anything much from him.
I think that is a bit of an oversimplification Bivol definitely has at least elite attributes, but I do agree he has not fought another elite talent - although Joe Smith Jr does have elite power. IMO he has elite judging of distance, fantastic timing, and really good shot selection - especially in combinations. I don't think yet we have seen Bivol go through the gears, and in that respect I think he might be a bit like Usyk. in that he can sometimes do 'just enough' in 3rd or 2nd gear, but can swithc up if needed. But there is not any proof of that just now. Beterbiev v Bivol is the fight I want to see; Artur already answered the questions in whether he could break down top fighter when he dismantled Gvozdyk, an Bivol doesn't have anything close that that on his resume. However, Bivol did get seriously chin-checked by Smith Jr, and came through that round extremely well. The big question for me on Bivol is whether he can raise his game enough to keep Beterbiev (and Canelo while we are at it) away from his body. That's the real question. I suppose with Bivol it comes down to the eye-test - he looks elite, and has dominated nearly all his fights without appearing to be in 1st gear. That sounds kinda similar to Crawford to me - Bivol needs something like Bud got from the Porter fight.
I wouldn't say he is sorely lacking power in a p4p sense relative to any given championship tier boxer who isn't specifically a KO artist. Is he a lighter hitter than, say, Ugás at welter? Stevenson at super feather? Haney at lightweight? "Knockout" at straw? I wouldn't say Bivol sticks out like a sore thumb, and this isn't even a particularly feather-fisted slate of champions. The ones mentioned above may not be known as huge punchers but they still aren't in the Malignaggi or Cuenca mold of extremes...and Bivol packs more of a punch than all of them. He is a dead average hitter. You're just spoiled by having deadly monsters in his periphery at LHW. Sort of like how a hot girl looks hotter when standing next to a plain one. Doesn't mean the plain one is herself unfuckable in a vacuum. (and in this analogy you have a couple of stone cold foxes in Beterbiev and Smith)
maybe one or two times and not even really bullied. the fight wasn't really competitive. that said, beterviev and canelo both beat bivol. maybe benevidez beats him as well.
Bivol's dangerous because of his skills. There's plenty of examples in history that show size and power aren't everything. Guys like Bivol just need to fight more often. Simple as that.
Great post as always! I would say about Smith this:he is a true warrior and willing to die in the ring too! and he will always have a punching chance...even against AB!
Well for me(ie my opinion btw...not the absolute truth, until the fight get made.) is only Beterbiev KO him inside 6,as for the others two theys have a chance of course(there's legits contenders) well out of those two who they beat that have that kind of defence and skills of Bivol? Benevidez have height advantage and reach and maybe work rate,combination...power advantage? not sure about that.Canelo(i don't hate him btw...for the hater.) got: height, reach, defence, maybe power disvadvantages?
Bivol is skilled no doubt. I just think that he ain't gonna KO Canelo and he won't outland him by a wide enough margin to get the W. As for Benevidez, maybe Bivol is a level above, maybe not. If he's not, he'll get covered up with busy.
