Which era is it, or isn't it an era yet? We had the golden era, with the likes of Foreman, Ali, Frazier and such. Then we got the Holmes era, not called that way, but still. Then we got the Tyson era. Followed by the Lewis/Holyfield era. After that the Klitschko era... And now we have this, with all currently active (former) belthoders. If they hold or held one or more of the bigger minor title(s), I'm putting a +n behind the titles. Special case, dominant Cruiserweight coming up Holyfield style and winning a couple of HW belts. Usyk, HW belts held 3+1, holding 3+1... CW held 5+1 #championships = 2 titlefights HW 1-0, 0 defences CW 7-0, 6 defences. The other natural heavyweights. Fury, HW belts held 5+1, holding 2 #championships = 2 titlefights 3-0-1, 1 defence. Joshua, HW belts held 3+1 #championships = 2 titlefights 9-2, 5 defences. Wilder, HW belts held 1 #championships = 1 titlefights 10-2-1, 10 defences. Parker, HW belts held 1 #championships = 1 titlefights 3-2, 2 defences. Ruiz Jr, HW belts held 3+1 #championships = 1 titlefights 1-2, 0 defences. Martin, HW belts held 1 #championships = 1 titlefights 1-1, 0 defences. Stiverne, HW belts held 1 #championships = 1 titlefights 1-3, 0 defences. Whyte, HW belts held 0+2, holding 0+1 #championships = 0+2 titlefights 2-1, 1 defence. Bryan, HW belts held 0+1, holding 0+1 #championships = 0+1 titlefights 2-0, 1 defence. Charr, HWbelts held 0+1, #championships = 0+1 titlefights 1-1, 0 defences. Anyone an idea of what to call this era?
Super heavyweight era. Wilder, Joshua, Fury, Usyk. 3 of the 4 are giants compared to past heavyweight eras.
Fury has already beaten Wilder and if he manages to beat AJ and Usyk you can make the argument about calling it the Fury Era.
The easy getting a belt era Charr Martin stivern Bryan the fact these have had belts says everything about boxing today
It's tt's too early to tell as Wilder and Fury to a lesser extent haven't fought the other top guys in the division. The 70's and 90's were strong eras not just in depth but in the fact nearly everyone fought and that gives us context. We live in an era were a couple of the top guys never had the ambition to unify. There's only Joshua and Usyk who have always had that clear intention and backed that up with actions. I think too many fanboys take the word of there favorite fighter as being fact. I like Fury but I know what comes out of his mouth is garbage. The "I'm a fighting man who will fight anyone" is clearly a porkie as he's backed out of many fights at this point with Whyte being the latest. So we have to see what happens in the next few years but it takes two to tango and I'm not convinced that either Wilder or Fury will be in the conversation when all said and done. As without them fighting the other top guys in the division there will always be that asterix next to there names.
Post Klitschko era hasn't really established a dominant fighter. AJ/Fury/Usyk will need to sort out who the best is, but they're getting older and I'm not sure we're gonna get much clarity.
More often than not, the HW division is weak, simply because there aren't that many 6'3+, 220+ pound men who can fight.
Oh they've been saying every heavyweight era is weak for decades.. Even in what is now considered a golden era… Lewis' era … They were saying the same thing… The Klitschko era was lambasted year upon year.. there's always just a couple of figureheads and then the rest make up the numbers.. this ones are fury, Usyk & Joshua.. and I believe two of them would have been successful in any era..
