I agree with everything here. I was just thinking of a chance happening like that, which always is a reality in boxing. And since a left hook is the most likely culprit for such a happening in Ali's case, I just threw out a left hooker which he might have taken a bit lightly. But you're absolutely right that Cooper was stylistically much more difficult for Ali than Quarry. Quarry hardly gave Ali a moment of trouble, even when he was fresh out of the lay-off, but Cooper might have been somewhat troublesome for Ali even in '66 if not for the cut. I think they were even on the cards when it occurred.
Yes, i thought you would agree. Your mention of Quarry was the second time he'd come up on this thread.
Thanks, great info. I'll try to chase that clip up. I agree with Ali - I think it would've been that much easier for the 22 yo version of himself.
The only "superior" (to 1960s) fighters of the 1970s were Frazier and Foreman. The idea that there was a whole generation of B-tier guys who were better than the Jones, Terrell, Folley, Patterson et al. is a nonsense.
Yeah, that's one of the myths of this forum that won't go away. Floyd, for example, did very well against the next generation right up to his retirement at 37. And Cooper at that age gave Bugner a very close fight. Chuvalo stopped Quarry - and even though it came a bit out of the blue and Quarry might have messed up the count, there's also the very real possibility that he really hurt Quarry. And while a guy like Tucker is still a respected contender, Terrell seems to get overlooked despite being a "modern SHW", in terms of height and reach, with fast accurate punches.
Thanks again. He expanded on the orig. question of young Clay v current Ali and included Foreman in his answer, good stuff. I'll reserve time to watch the whole of this program - looks very good.
Floyd still looked incredibly fit and fast in the 72 rematch with Ali. During the course of the fight, Patterson actually landed some pretty hard shots in blazing combos that Ali clearly felt. Floyd was quite the puncher for his size/weight.
I don't like young Ali against Frazier at all. I like man-strength chin-found rope-a-dope Ali better.
I read it. Nobody called Hearns a LHW despite his height and reach. And Terrell wasn't ever that good.
If you read it, you would have seen that I wrote a SHW "in terms of height and reach", which of course is simply true. Now, why don't you go back to General, where you belong, and whine about Canelo some more.
Are you a Clenelo fan, sir? I would rather stay here and look at your Ali fanboyism. You are just trying to up Terrell to something he never was.
