After retiring for a couple of years, Floyd Patterson launched a comeback. From september of 1970 to July of 1972 he compiled 9 strait victories including one over contender Oscar Bonavena. In September of 1972 he fought a rematch with Muhammad Ali and lost in what would be his last and final fight ever. I didn’t really have much of a reason for making this thread other than I thought it was a good comeback effort for Patterson. Decent string of wins

Patterson was an excellent fighter. He just had the misfortune to come along when the heavyweights started getting bigger. He fit more into the old school heavyweights of 185-200 lbs.

If he was around today,he likely starts as a super middleweight. No doubt that he could win belts up to cruiserweight. He probably could win a heavyweight strap, but that would require some cherry picking of opponents. Like RJJ had John Ruiz to take the fall. Patterson would need a John Ruiz.

Post Championship, Floyd had a magnificent career. To think he was in the top 10 for a decade in the company he was in is frankly astonishing. He would be a phenomenon today.

    Patterson was brilliant for years.
I do think Bonavena probably deserved a draw at least though.

think Patterson could’ve avenged his loss to Liston this if he’d gotten the fight. Wouldn’t say much though.

You mean before or after Liston died?

Floyd Patterson's last fight was on Sept 20 1972 in Madison Square Garden against Muhammad Ali. Floyd lost by a TKO 7, due to a cut eyelid.

He wouldn't avenge ****, as long as Liston had a breath left in him.
I love Patterson, but no, he's not beating Liston.

According to Dubblechin on here, Patterson was already" broken down " in1967, when he fought Quarry!

Even though Liston was vastly deteriorated by the late 60s I don’t think Patterson would have mentally been able to overcome those two brutal defeats to beat him

Only a sadist would let Floyd back in the ring with Sonny. Plus couldn't imagine any promoter trying to sell this even if Liston was 50.

Yes probably, The Ring at the time said Oscar should have won the decision.

Had Liston lived, do you think he would have been back in the ring as a third man?
