It's always weird to me comparing fighters from Dempsey's era to what I refer to as the more modern style of fighting. Still, I'll go with Dempsey by KO, he was a bruiser.
Dempsey at his best was a far better heavyweight than Charles. I just think sooner or later he gets to Ezzard
I don’t think Charles could KO Dempsey. I mean Charles (At HW) couldn’t even KO an old and rusty Joe Louis who wasn’t known for his great chin.
Jack Dempsey takes EZ out in a competitive match. Charles will not be able to keep Jack off of him, and a prime Dempsey would be in control physically from the 1st round. Charles will tire out, and get caught at some point or another. But, I will generously say Ezzard in his prime is slick enough to last 9 rounds . He then wilts and goes down for the count. Dempsey KO 9
I think Charles was a better rounded and tested ATG and I’d favor him. But a puncher like Dempsey could also turn things around pretty quick.
No I think their chins are comparable. Dempseys has a lot more power than Charles so I would favor EC to crack first. Dempsey caught Tunney who was a much better mover than Charles so I think EC time will come.
Tunney wasn't a better mover than Charles lol. Whatever Tunney could do Charles could do it a thousand times better. He also had a proven chin, taking several blows from Marciano, Walcott and Louis who had geniune power.
Dempsey by stoppage ,against a fast bobbing and weaving Jack ,Charles would be unable to exploit his quickness as he was against some of the big guys he outpointed.
Jack eventually. He'd make Charles uncomfortable from the start. I see Dempsey winning around the mid way mark.
You learn more in some ways about Dempsey in his second loss to Tunney than in any of his filmed wins ..if you watch the film carefully you see that even with faded hand and leg speed and stamina, Dempsey had a lot more overall game than many who write him off today claim .. he fought the absolute prime Tunney , who in my opinion was faster, stronger, had a better chin and was a better heavyweight than Charles , and even though he lost rounds he was very competitive in many and came fractions of inches from taking his head off many times ..I feel a prime Dempsey, short as it was , say Willard to Carpentier, was too tough , too strong, too fast and far too hard-hitting for Charles .. great fight , very competitive but I like Jack to stop him ..
