You can include guys who obviously where a part of the 60s like Ali but did the bulk in the 70s. I’d still call him a “70s fighter”.
1.Muhammad Ali 2.Roberto Duran 3.Sugar Ray Leonard 4.Marvin Haggler 5.Roy Jones Jr 6.Pernell Whitaker 7.Manny pacquiao 8.Tommy Hearns 9.Floyd Mayweather 10.Carlos Monzon Very very rough draft done at like 11:25pm
Based only on what they did 1970 and onwards 1. Roberto Duran 2. Muhammad Ali 3. Ray Leonard 4. Manny Pacquiao 5. Floyd Mayweather 6. Marvin Hagler 7. Thomas Hearns 8. Roy Jones Jr 9. Ruben Olivares 10. Alexis Arguello This was made off the top of my head at 1:17 AM. Take it with a grain of salt.
1a. Roberto Duran 1b. Sugar Ray Leonard 3. Muhammad Ali 4. Pernell Whitaker 5. Floyd Mayweather Jr. 6. Alexis Arguello 7. Marvin Hagler 8a. Roy Jones Jr. 8b. Thomas Hearns 10. Manny Pacquiao
I'm curious who you guys think ranks higher Hearns or Jones? Because that was one of the tricky parts of making the list.
01 - Muhammad Ali 02 - Roberto Duran 03 - Ray Leonard 04 - Floyd Mayweather 05 - Manny Pacquiao 06 - Pernell Whitaker 07 - Roy Jones 08 - Carlos Monzon 09 - Marvin Hagler 10 - Julio Cesar Chavez 11 - Mike Spinks 12 - Alexis Arguello 13 - Tommy Hearns 14 - Bernard Hopkins 15 - Evander Holyfield 16 - Sal Sanchez 17 - Wilfredo Gomez 18 - Miguel Canto 19 - Larry Holmes 20 - Bob Foster 21 - Juan Manuel Marquez 22 - Roman Gonzalez 23 - Oscar De La Hoya 24 - Mike McCallum 25 - Azumah Nelson 26 - Wilfred Benitez 27 - Erik Morales 28 - Antonio Barrera 29 - Joe Frazier 30 - Lennox Lewis Something like that. I excluded Vicente Saldivar as a sixties fighter.
Chuvalo Norton Foreman Leonard Hearns Hagler Duran Ali Frazier those are about the only names I knew or remember seeing from the 70s, the 80s were more the time for loads of televised fights on various Networks.
Because he's amazing I actually nearly had him even higher. I get confused about Money/Pac. I sort of spot them around, I really need to sit down and sort it.
01 - Duran 02 - Leonard 03 - Jones Jr. 04 - Pryor 05 - Whitaker 06 - Mayweather Jr. 07 - Monzon 08 - Hagler 09 - Ali 10 - Hearns 11 - Napoles 12 - Chavez 13 - Pacquiao 14 - Marcel 15 - Sanchez Ali has a case of being the most difficult to defeat at his weight. But the available talent at heavyweight cannot, in my opinion, compete with the overall depth of the lower divisions. Jones (demoted from 2 to 3 just before posting) and more so Pryor are sure to be controversial. I'm not overly fond of where I have them placed, and can offer no satisfactory justification. I just feel in the case of Pryor that his unnatural pace sees him succeed in spite of vastly inferior skills. EDIT: Forgot about Hearns. Moved Ali and Pacquiao up two spots. Gomez just misses out. Currently considering Hopkins.
