You should never be apologetic about posting footage you find interesting around here I don't think. I post stuff nobody watches or wants to all the time, but it's cool to see what other people are at and find interesting. You should put what it is in the thread title.
I wonder if we’ll ever find new film of either. I’ve seen all this before. I believe someone had film of Jack Johnson dressed as a matador fooling around that’d be swell to see.
Great footage, absolutely love this stuff and the colorisation process continues to progressively improve though it always depends on the quality of the original BW footage being sourced in the first place. Call me crazy but I see some resemblance between Sam Langford and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Might as well post this here - some less often seen training footage of Jack Johnson. There’s a slightly extended version of the usual Johnson punching and knocking the speed bag off the bracket - as Jack walks off he gives his right hand a small shake - I’m guessing that last punch might’ve smarted a bit. One last thing, Marty “Kid” Cutler’s overhand rights resemble more the action of a cricket fast bowler than punches. He missed his true calling. LOL. This content is protected
Jack Johnson dressed as matador - I saw that footage eons ago but never since. Also, we all know the point at which the Johnson - Burns film freezes, as if aligned with the police stopping the fight and shutting down the cameras. I have definitely seen a version where the footage continues after Johnson’s right cross appears to be sending Burns to the deck - Burns doesn’t in fact go down, he hangs tough and takes a few more shots - the version we see today maybe an arbitrary cut/edit by Jimmy Jacobs - perhaps someone else knows more about this -
Thanks for posting! I really enjoyed this clip. I really got a kick out of the dog watching Johnson train! I've not seen that much footage of Langford before, and although short, he looked to be bursting with power.
Actually what you mentioned about Johnson finishing burns it sounds familiar but I’m not going to lie and say I remember I just have a feeling I’ve seen it… Matador Johnson is a nice boxing name and suited him aha.
I did forget: - there is a similar type recording of Johnson played toward the end of the above clip 15:24 sec, Johnson describing the KO of Jeffries - a touch emasculating? LOL. Anyway, you can compare that to the much clearer audio of Jack speaking prior to the war bond rally exhibition with Joe Jeanette, his pitch being that much lower.
You’re right there, dodging then spearing the bulls. Johnson wasn’t wrong when he said: “When they made me, they broke the mould.” Even Ali thought Jack was one crazy cat, crazier than himself and that’s really saying something. Haha.
Yes, I remember this was discussed a few years ago. It seems that, as you say, the frequently-played clip where Burns looks to be on his way down was actually taken from the middle of the fight. Sadly the film of the final rounds is lost.
From the middle of the fight? That’s very interesting - if I ever come across the continued/extended footage again, rest assured, I will link it here for my fellow boxing nuts.
