People are confusing H2H with P4P. Resume & accomplishments have nothing to do with H2H. Riddick Bowe & Vitali Klitschko had weak resumes, but they are rated highly H2H by most people (including myself). Wilder is pretty good when it comes to H2H HW's.
Problem is that we need the resume in order to rate the other attributes. I agree he's not without his qualities and at times he's been underrated, but that careful career planning by Finkel and Deeas has made it difficult to make a case for Wilder at the very top level. Great power, plenty of heart, not really able to say much more than that.
I actually do think he's underrated and I'd back him to beat pretty much anyone in the division outside of Usyk and Fury. Just a shame he wasted so much of his prime fighting nobodies.
Wilder's size combined with his power makes him dangerous in H2H. But the fact Ortiz troubled him shows that medium-sized heavies have a good chance of beating him. If Ortiz can cause problems, then so can Ali, both Klitschko's, Lennox etc in the past. As for now, I see Usyk and Joyce beating him. I've changed my mind on a few matchups though. I used to think Whyte would beat him, but Deontay has shown heart and a solid chin. I think he'd knock Whyte out cold. AJ is also a toss-up. I previously thought AJ had the advantage, but I tend to prefer Deontay now. And he probably beats the rest I haven't mentioned.
Bowe is overrated H2H in my opinion but even his weak resume craps all over Wilder's with his 2 wins over Holyfield and Bowe actually had some boxing skills, could fight on the inside too and didn't just rely on power. Vitali is a better example of a H2H monster, resume doesn't match his actual ability. But unlike Wilder, Vitali didn't struggle with journeymen and fringe contenders. While Wilder was getting dropped by Sconiers and Nichols on the way up, Vitali was crushing similar level guys early. Wilder won his title vs an ill Stiverne going 12 rounds while Vitali crushed Hide in 2 to earn his first title. Wilder was struggling in title defences against guys like Molina, Duhaupas, Szpilka and Washington. While Vitali was dominating guys like Peter, Johnson, Gomez and Chisora in comparison. Chisora alone would beat Duhaupas Szpilka and Washington and do so convincingly. Wilder needed a robbery when stepping up to fight a 50% Fury for the first time. Vitali lost to Lewis but pushed him hard and was stopped on an injury. Wilder's best win is vs a faded old Ortiz who's best win is Jennings. Vitali's best win is probably Sanders who's best win is Wlad. Ones a head to head monster the other is a head to head joke.
