I just found out Skipper of DAZN was fired a few months ago. The guy simply did not know the dynamics of boxing and lost the company money hand over fist overpaying fighters that just can't sell and bringing little to no revenue to the platform. DAZN is now in negotiations for a major soccer league contract. This will tie up alot of money presumably. Does DAZN continue to spend a massive amount of money on boxing or will they leave? One of the reasons HBO left boxing is because they realized they were wasting money investing money on boxing when they can spend a fraction of that amount on a show and get a much higher return on investment. Fighters are also overpaid nowadays and they generate big purses even though the economics of their fights don't justify the purses they get, except a few fighters like Canelo, Gervonta, Fury, AJ, etc.
January is always a lull for anyone who does live shows, so it's usually a bad month for boxing. What DAZN is doing, charging a month's subscription with zero content, is ridiculous though.
I think the fact the UK put a pause on staging boxing events in Jan probably didn't help. I really, really hope they do. They have a solid roster and have put on some great content. But I never thought that business would be model would be viable forever.
I did the yearly thing with DAZN and it comes out to $9 US dollars a month but if you don’t put anything on for that month that is $9 dollars to much. DAZN changing leadership means changing is coming. Boxing may die , it depends on the contract they have with the boxers and for how long. After that contract is up they may look at more lucrative sports.
It isn't zero content. New interviews or reports every day, archive of fights, dont forget darts. Personally I tune in every day to see what's up in the boxing world, or should I say the Eddie Hearn world. I'm not interested in soccer, cricket or darts (!) but DAZN carries lots of those games. Ok maybe Japanese soccer league isn't that good but if you like soccer I suppose you'd watch. January is slow for boxing, let's face it.
It's ridiculous when you compare it to the ESPN+ app, which is a quarter of the price and has live sports going on basically 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
I agree with this....ESPN+ is a much better bargain. But we are boxing fans; we should be used to taking it up the arse.
Jealous can't get ESPN+ in UK would love to have it for the NFL content and UFC Dazn I don't mind paying for in UK it's basically same price as Netflix and since Eddie took his fighters off sky it's worth it hopefully boxing comes back big this year
This is my New Year's resolution for Eddie: one fight every single month. Don't care if it's a Polish amateur gala or a street fight in Panama, consistency is nice in a streaming service. I do like one other thing they do though, when they have fighters (or close associates) watch a fight. They've had some real gems: Eddie Hearn watching Ruiz vs AJ 1. Mora watching his own fight vs Shane Mosley and trying to badger Todd Grisham into scoring it his way. A few that ODLH did where he actually gave some insights. They should do more of those. Let's hear Cheeseman comment on his fight with Williamson, get it to be a regular thing.
