    Orlando Canizales v Kelvin Seabrooks

What a fighter Orlando Canizales was. It’s just a shame that he didn’t dare to be greater. On this form, he’s have given any bantamweight a run for their money. Seabrooks showed a lot of heart but he was outmatched here.

1 10-7 (Canizales drops Seabrooks hard and then has him on **** street for the rest of the round)
    2 10-9
3 10-9 (still a Canizales round but Seabrooks fought back well towards the end)
4 10-9 (again, Seabrooks has his moments but Canizales is boxing beautifully)
    5 10-9
6 9-10 (close. Seabrooks best round of the fight)
7 9-10 (another good round for Seabrooks)
8 10-10 (close round with Seabrooks probably doing most of the work but Canizales caught him at the end with a beautiful combo - best punches of the round)
9 10-9 (Canizales has Seabrooks hurt at the end of the round)
    10 10-9 (close)
11 9-10 (close again. Seabrooks with the more steady output. Canizales more sporadic but throwing the sharper combos)
    12 10-9
    13 10-9
    14 10-9
    (137-128)
    15 Canizales TKO Seabrooks
(another KD and then the follow up brings the ref’s intervention)

Jel, I scored this one not too long ago myself. This is how I saw it. Almost the same as you, although you were far more descriptive than I. Good write-up.

Kelvin Seabrooks v Orlando Canizales I (bantamweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 OC (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 OC
    Round 3: 10-9 OC
    Round 4: 10-9 OC
    Round 5: 10-9 OC
    Round 6: 10-9 KS
    Round 7: 10-9 KS
    Round 8: 10-9 OC
    Round 9: 10-9 OC
    Round 10: 10-9 OC
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-9 OC
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 OC
Round 15: Canizales drops and stops Seabrooks

Total through 14 completed rounds: 138-129 Canizales (actual scores: 137-128, 137-127 and 138-128 all for Canizales)

If this was the last of the 15 rounders, it went out in style. Canizales fought a beautiful fight of boxing, punching and body work without forsaking defense. However, Seabrooks kept every round close with his sharp, straight punches. A really elegant, hard-fought fight that I highly recommend.

Shea Neary v Micky Ward (WBUnderwhelming title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Ward
    Round 2: 10-9 Neary
    Round 3: 10-9 Neary
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Neary
    Round 7: 10-9 Ward
Round 8: Ward drops Neary twice and the fight is called

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-67 or 138-137 Neary (actual scores: 139-131 and 136-135 both for Neary and a 135-134 for Ward. For some brief period - appears to be WBU only - a 20 point must scoring system was used. Possibly to separate themselves from others until someone woke up and realized what a stupid idea that was.)

A very good fight. One which I used to re-watch time and again after taping everything in sight related to boxing back in the day. One point I missed back then - probably because I was adept at stopping the VCR between rounds and missed the dialogue - was Neary's corner telling him between one of the rounds, "Shea, confuse him with your boxing!" When I heard that I must admit to laughing out loud and saying, "Wait, what?" I'll bet even Neary said, "My what?" Neary was a straight ahead take no prisoners-type of fighter who liked to whack the body and this just made for a damn good fight with Ward who loved returning the favor with his pin-point left hook to the liver, which is what ultimately finished Shea. Great seeing this one again.

One other point I should bring up, in the movie 'The Fighter' about Micky Ward, this fight was made out to be his crowning achievement. Winning the 'world' championship. A bit of cinematic license taken there. In reality, Ward thought so much of the WBU title, he never even bothered to defend it.

Philly, I checked to see if anyone else had checked this fight out and see that you did about 2 years ago. We pretty much saw it the same. A good fight. I see you also checked out Neary against Holligan and said it was a fun fight. If it's still out there I'll give it a view.

The WBU title was very respected in certain areas around California at the time (g).

    Philly, just checked it out.

Shea Nery v Andy Holligan (WBU crap 140 lb. title)

The WBU may have been crap, but there wasn't anything crap about this fight. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed this one more than Ward-Nery. I am critical about all these alphabet titles. They are all crap and need to be dissolved for boxing to take its rightful place in mainstream sport once again. The only thing I will say about the WBU that they deserve noteworthy praise on was the commentator mentioning how this was the only organization that went according to the Independent Rankings, not their own. Which, of course as we know from the WBA and WBC, just make up their own ratings to fit whom they're going to call their mandatory challenger depending on how much money they receive. Anyways, on to the fight.

These two were not ring generals at all. They met ring center, laid their heads on one another and banged away. Not in any wild manner. A very refined slugfest which I simply loved. Not running a card here. I gave Holligan the 5th round and the rest to Neary before dropping Andy in the 6th and stopping him for a 49-46 scorecard, which all 3 judges agreed on. This arena had to be electric. Two world class Liverpool lads going at it. Just a terrific fight. Thanks for putting it on my radar, dude.

One last thing, totally laughed me arse off when the commentator said, "Holligan has really taken this fight seriously, he's laid off the booze for the last 6 weeks!" Man, doesn't that say it all.

Was it really? I would hazard a guess that anyone getting a title shot - even if he was a clubfighter - would be getting excited over this new organization (at the time). But again, I refer to it poorly because it was just another organization watering down the sport. They should all be dissolved like a control burn where new growth can begin.

    Spence vs Porter
    1:10-9
    2:9-10
    3:10-9
    4:9-10
    5:9-10
    6:10-9
    7:9-10
    8:10-9
    9:9-10
    10:9-10
    11:10-8
    12:10-9

    114-113

This was an amazing fight. Amazing.

So competitive and such a beautiful style clash. For the first 8 rounds I had it dead even and the definition of nip and tuck. Porter strong and enforcing his will, but Spence so solid and accurate. It was very hard to split them.

Then round 9 I felt Spence was tiring and Porter was starting to pull away a bit as he looked to be bullying Spence around the ring. I felt Porter also got the better of the 10th as well and was on his way to upsetting the odds.

But then in 11 Spence lands a beautiful short hook that drops Porter, and thus gives Spence a second wind as he closes out the do fight strong and is able to more than match Porter punch for punch.

    Great fight. Close victory.

My bad! Took it too literal. Good one. Hollywood would look favorable on anything like a WBU. Even an Inter-Continental belt if it could sell a ticket.

    Jeff Chandler v Gaby Canizales

This was a bit of a slow burner with Chandler seeming to feel out Canizales over the first few rounds while Orlando’s older brother worked away at the body. Then Chandler started controlling the distance with a double-tap jab followed by a straight right to keep Gaby honest.

Even though I didn’t give Canizales a round from the 6th on, he had a case in couple of rounds for maybe a share of them but ultimately he failed to break Chandler’s rhythm and the verdict was never in doubt.

    1 10-10
2 9-10 (good body attack from Canizales)
3 9-10 (close. Chandler boxing very much within himself at the moment. Canizales continues with the eye catching body work and the only punches that seem to have any sting behind them. Tony Perez tells Canizales to keep ‘em up - he was so it’s a silly call from the ref.)
4 10-9 (Chandler finally lets his hands go a bit towards the end and it’s enough to sneak another close round)
5 9-10 (close again. Overall, Canizales did the better work despite Chandler’s end of round flurry again)
    6 10-9
7 10-9 (Chandler building some momentum)
8 10-9 (Chandler looks in control)
9 10-9 (better from Canizales who works the body again but it isn’t enough to take the round)
    10 10-9
    11 10-9
12 10-9 (good from both but Chandler still in control)
13 10-9 (best action of the fight. Close but still gave it to Chandler)
    14 10-9
    15 10-9

    Chandler 147-139 Canizales

Jel, I had it a little closer at 146-141 for Jeff, but agree with you that the 13th was the best action of the fight.

Rocky Lockridge vs Eusebio Pedroza 1

    1 Lockridge
    2 Lockridge
    3 Lockridge
    4 Pedroza
    5 Lockridge
    6 Pedroza
    7 Pedroza
    8 Pedroza
    9 Pedroza
    10 Pedroza
    11 Lockridge
    12 Pedroza
    13 Lockridge
    14 Pedroza
    15 Lockridge

    143-142 Pedroza

So i'm going through Pedroza's fights atm, this is my 1st time watching this fight. And i was excited to see it because i heard Lockridge was robbed.

IMO i thought the commentator's were bit biased towards Lockridge, and the ringside poll they were doing was also biased. Because it was Lockridge's hometown, so obviously the crowd aren't going to score it down the line.

I disagreed that Lockridge won the first 7 rounds, i thought Pedroza def won a couple of them rounds with his body punching. And after the 7th round i thought Pedroza mostly had the best of it. With the 14th round being close to 10-8, because Pedroza really dominated that round.

But after Pedroza having his best round of the fight the 14th, he didn't seem to have much left. And kind of sleepwalked through the 15th round, and i thought Lockridge stole that round. But it wasn't enough to swing it in his favour IMO.

I thought the fight was close and could of gone either, there were atleast 4 or 5 close rounds, which would of gone either way. And some of them could of been scored even, but i tend to avoid scoring even rounds.

Overall i think it may of got reputation of being a robbery, because of the awful score of 149-139 which was indeed ridiculous. But i still don't think having Pedroza as the winner was the wrong decision.

Don't remember my exact score but I also had it for Pedroza by a point.

Welcome aboard by the way. Nice to see new faces to compare scorecards with.
