Myung Woo Yuh v Leo Gamez I (Jr. flyweight title) Round 1: 10-9 Gamez Round 2: 10-9 Yuh Round 3: 10-9 Gamez Round 4: 10-9 Yuh Round 5: 10-9 Yuh Round 6: 10-9 Yuh Round 7: 10-10 Even Round 8: 10-10 Even Round 9: 10-9 Gamez Round 10: 10-9 Yuh Round 11: 10-9 Gamez Round 12: 10-9 Gamez Total: 115-115 Draw (actual scores: 116-114 Gamez and scores of 117-115 and 116-113 both for Yuh for a split win) To begin, man, I loved this fight! I've been watching a lot of Yuh lately because I really think he was something else. However, having never seen him before, Leo Gamez was a revelation. Not a banger, but he possessed a remarkable left jab and he was an awesome counter-puncher. But a facet of boxing that doesn't get much print was his impeccable footwork. Oh, man, he moved in and out of trouble so seamlessly it was a pleasure to watch. I don't have any issues with the decision because Yuh's shots did have more bite on them and at least the judges had it close. Because they fought neck and neck the entire way. Again, I loved this fight.
Eusebio Pedroza vs Rocky Lockridge 2 1 Even 2 Lockridge 3 Pedroza 4 Lockridge 5 Pedroza 6 Pedroza 7 Lockridge 8 Pedroza 9 Lockridge 10 Lockridge 11 Lockridge 12 Pedroza 13 Pedroza 14 Lockridge 15 Pedroza 143-143 Draw So this fight was the polar opposite of the 1st meeting, Pedroza was alot more competitive in the early rounds. And Lockridge was alot more competitive in the late rounds, very tough fight to score there was alot of inside fighting. And the quality of the video i watched wasn't the greatest, so i did have a hard time scoring the close rounds at times. I felt like Pedroza did lay on the ropes far too much though, and let Lockridge outhustle him in quite of the few later rounds. Overall i thought it was alot tougher to score than the 1st meeting, and i thought maybe Lockridge had a better case for winning the rematch than he did the 1st fight.
So last night and today I watched a couple of fights I’d seen several times before and rate within my top 20 all-time. I don’t think I’ve watched Ali-Frazier 3 for close to 20 years but I wanted to see if my exalted memories of it still held up. I followed up with Trinidad-Vargas for about the 8th or 9th time and didn’t score that one, but loved rewatching it. Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier 3 I’d still argue that Ali-Frazier 3 is as good a heavyweight fight as I’ve seen but in terms of fights across the weight classes, it’s slipped a bit in my estimation. Probably because I’ve seen a lot more fights since I last watched it. 1 10-9 (Ali seems to hurt Frazier near the end of the round) 2 9-10 (close. Frazier did the more consistent work) 3 10-9 (close. Ali rope-a-doping and does enough to take the round despite the clowning) 4 10-9 (Even though Ali won the round, Frazier got some good shots in and his constant body attack is having an impact) 5 9-10 (Frazier starting to land that left hook with regularity. Ali pot shotting but missing a lot too) 6 9-10 (Big Frazier round. Landing the left hook at will and putting everything into his punches. Ali isn’t clowning now.) 7 10-9 (close. Ali moving now and not sticking on the ropes.) 8 9-10 (Frazier is making Ali fight and Ali is taking a beating against the ropes) 9 9-10 10 10-10 (both landing hard shots, both look tired) 11 10-9 (close) 12 10-9 (both fighters are looking really tired - not much on either fighter’s punches) 13 10-9 (Big Ali round. Frazier wobbled.) 14 10-9 (Another big Ali round) (135-132; Ali ahead 8-5-1 in rounds) Ali RTD Frazier
Eusebio Pedroza vs Juan LaPorte 1 LaPorte 2 LaPorte 3 LaPorte 10-8 point deduction 4 Pedroza 5 Pedroza 6 LaPorte 7 Pedroza 8 Even round 9-9 because of point deduction 9 Pedroza 10 Pedroza 11 Pedroza 12 Pedroza 13 Pedroza 14 Even round 9-9 because of point deduction 15 Pedroza 143-139 Pedroza So yes another Pedroza fight today i'm currently going through his career atm. LaPorte dominated the first 3 rounds stunning Pedroza quite badly in rounds 2 and 3. And with the point deduction Pedroza was already in a hole being 4 points down. But Pedroza is such a good 15 round fighter and after the bad start he slowly started to work his way back in the fight. With some tactics that certainly wern't in the queensbury rules but the fight was still competitive with LaPorte having his moments in spurts and still being dangerous with his right hands. After the 8th round i thought Pedroza controlled the fight and really took the fight to LaPorte. And never stopped throwing punches and just outworked LaPorte down the stretch. And even with the 3 point deductions i still think Pedroza deserved the win quite clearly, although he may of been lucky not to get DQ'ed aswell. But overall a pretty exciting fight the most exciting Pedroza fight i've seen so far.
Also is Ruben Castillo vs Juan LaPorte worth watching ? i see that in my recommended videos on YT after watching this fight.
Yes, it's very good actually. It shows good parts of Laporte along with a couple crucial flaws in my view.
Dynamic, believe me, it is well worth it. If memory serves me, there was a round or 2 that really tests your judging skills. This was one of those fights where I was absolutely positive of a Castillo victory. But that’s boxing.
I should clarify this. I meant to say going into this fight I felt Castillo would win. The decision was just.
Wilfredo Vasquez v Antonio Avelar Round 1: 10-9 Vasquez Round 2: 10-9 Avelar Round 3: 10-9 Vasquez Round 4: 10-10 Even Round 5: 10-9 Vasquez (both score knockdowns, but Vasquez' counters are much sharper throughout - unbelievable round) Round 6: 10-9 Avelar Round 7: 10-9 Avelar Round 8: Avelar drops and stops Vasquez Total through 7 completed rounds: 67-67 Even (actual scores are unknown) Y'know, outside of the 5th round, which I've seen on highlight before, I have never seen this fight before. Had it on my list for awhile and finally getting to it. What an amazing fight. In the 7th round Vasquez' body language made me think he was gassing, which continued into the 8th. We know of course he was very successful at 122, so maybe he was killing himself at 118, who knows. But Avelar's finish was succinct. This may have been a final eliminator for Miguel Lora's bantamweight crown as they introduced him just before the fight and Avelar did challenge for his title in his next fight. But this was truly a fantastic fight.
Ruben Castillo vs Juan LaPorte 1 Castillo 2 LaPorte 3 Castillo 4 LaPorte 5 Castillo 6 Castillo 7 LaPorte 8 LaPorte 9 LaPorte 10 LaPorte 10-8 standing 8 count 11 LaPorte 10-8 knockdown 12 LaPorte 10-8 knockdown Juan LaPorte 116-109 So i watched this fight after it got recommend to me by @salsanchezfan @scartissue firstly i just want to say thanks for the recommendation, i really enjoyed the fight. I thought the 1st half of the fight Castillo boxed nicely, he had some nice combinations and left hooks to the body. And he was out landing Laporte, so i felt Castillo had a 4-2 lead after 6 rounds. But then the momentum of the fight turned around quite abruptly, as LaPorte come out for the 7th round meaning business. Maybe sensing he was behind and he started being alot more aggressive and landing the right hand. But the moment where fight really turned around was the 9th round, i actually thought Castillo made a nice comeback in that round. And i was about to score it for him, until LaPorte badly stunned him in the last 20 seconds or so. So i felt LaPorte won the round based on that. Castillo still feeling the effects of the 9th round, took a standing 8 count in the 10th. And took a tremendous beating, so much so i was actually somewhat close to scoring 10-7. But after that round amazingly Castillo showing alot of heart, actually made a nice comeback in the 11th round. And i was just about to score it for Castillo. Until out of nowhere LaPorte floors him in the final seconds of the round. The 12th round Castillo didn't have much left as he was floored again, and luckily for him title fights were no longer 15 rounds. So he was able to last the distance. Overall an exciting fight with a good contrast of styles, it really was a fight of two halves.
This thread is by far my favorite ongoing conversation on the entire internet. Just wanted to convey my appreciation for all who post their fight reports. I try to make time when I can, but I read every one of them. So … thank you.
Absolutely! Props to all the regular posters who keep this going, in particular @scartissue. It’s great to see new, thoughtful contributors like @Dynamicpuncher posting here as well. Like you, I try to post here when I can - I had a lull in recent weeks leading up to Christmas but the one benefit of catching COVID in the last week has actually meant I had time to rest up, watch some fights and do some scorecards.
That’s a wicked fight! Shout out to @George Crowcroft who put me onto it originally. The 5th is definitely one of the all-time classic rounds but the whole fight is entertaining with or without that. Glad you enjoyed it, Scar!
