Was in the mood for a Julio Cesar Chavez fight today. Always loved his methodical breakdown of a fighter and this fight ticked every box for me.

Julio Cesar Chavez v Rodolfo Aguilar (lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 Chavez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Aguilar
    Round 3: 10-9 Aguilar
    Round 4: 10-9 Chavez
    Round 5: 10-9 Chavez
Round 6: Chavez drops and stops Aguilar

Total through 5 completed rounds: 48-46 Chavez (actual scores: 48-46 and 2 scores of 49-45 all for Chavez)

To begin, I fast-forwarded to round 1 and neglected to look at the sanctioning body. One always relates Chavez to the WBC and I was there thinking that this was very strange, that the WBC is rating a Panamanian as their #1 contender. Normally it's the WBA who rates undeserving Panamanians, Venezuelans and South Koreans as their #1 contender. I had forgotten that Chavez won the WBA from Rosario and this was a WBA defense. When I saw that, the usual corrupt organizational rating meant sense to me once again. It's bad that I have to say that but those countries were so in bed with the WBA we just automatically compartmentalize the cash-cow countries with their sanctioning counterparts.

OK, that's me on my soapbox for today. On to the fight. Although Aguilar had fast, rangy hands, he had fought no one to get his rating or this fight and really could have used some seasoning. Chavez did his patient, methodical beat down with precision. First by taking the heart from Aguilar and then the body. Good stoppage by Steele as Aguilar was done like dinner.

    Eusebio Pedroza vs Jorge Lujan

    1 Lujan
    2 Lujan
    3 Lujan
    4 Lujan
    5 Pedroza
    6 Pedroza
    7 Pedroza
    8 Pedroza
    9 Pedroza
    10 Pedroza
    11 Pedroza
    12 Pedroza
    13 Pedroza
    14 Pedroza 10-8 knockdown
    15 Lujan

    Pedroza 145-139

Another exciting Pedroza fight, Lujan came out meaning business he really took it to Pedroza. It seemed like he couldn't miss with the right hand, and the 3rd round Lujan must of landed over 20 clean right hands. As he really put a beating on Pedroza in that round, and at one point seemed like he may of been somewhat close to putting Pedroza down or stopping him.

But after a barnburner in the first 4 rounds the pace somewhat slowed, and then it became more Pedroza's fight. As he controlled the fight with his jab backing up Lujan and landing some nice body shots, along with the occasional right hand and right uppercut. And Lujan would only fight in spurts from there on.

I did give Lujan the 15th round though, maybe i was swayed a little because he showed so much heart. And it was his best round for such a long time, that i thought he was deserving of the 15th round.

But overall a pretty good exciting fight worth watching, i think Lujan went all out in the first 4 rounds to get a knockout. Because he was moving up in weight, and maybe he didn't think he'd have the strength and stamina, to win over 15 rounds against the bigger Pedroza.

    Earl Hargrove vs Don King

    1 Hargrove knockdown 10-8
    2 Hargrove
    3 King
    4 King
    5 Hargrove
    6 Hargrove
    7 Hargrove
    8 King
    9 stoppage Hargrove wins TKO

    77-74 Hargrove

What can i say about this fight ? absolutely unbelievable one of the best fights i've seen in sometime.

Earl Hargrove comes out for the 1st round, in probably one of the most aggressive and brutal displays i've ever seen. He drops King in the first 30 seconds, and never stops punching for the entire 3 minutes, with King even coming back in the last minute. An opening round that would rival Hearns/Hagler.

After that amazing round King miraciously recovers, and then starts backing up Hargrove. And from then on the fight is just a back and forth war, with both men taking ridiculous amount of punishment. And it's basically down to who wants it more.

The 8th round both men with basically hardly anything left, just keep hitting eachother over and over. I don't think a single punch was blocked, a round straight out of a rocky movie.

Finally Hargrove catches King in the 9th round who is dazed and goes back towards the ropes, and Hargrove lands few more head snapping punches. And the ref rightly steps in to end a brutal slugfest.

Few other interesting things about the fight, Frank Fletcher was at ringside. And was saying he'd move down to Jr Middleweight to fight the winner. Can you imagine how good of a fight Earl Harlgrove vs Frank Fletcher would of been ?

Also the infamous trainer Panama Lewis was in Don King's corner.

Overall amazing fight i recommend anyone to watch this.

If you haven't seen it I also recommend Earl Hargrove vs Mark Medal, another classic slugfest your really enjoy. I also think it had a strong case for winning FOTY in 1984.

Hargrove could bang but I remember that Medal weathered the storm and Hargrove ran out of steam.

He fought John Mugabi the next year. That went worse.

Curtis Parker vs Mustafa Hamsho 1

    1 Parker
    2 Hamsho
    3 Hamsho
    4 Hamsho
    5 Hamsho
    6 Parker
    7 Parker
    8 Parker
    9 Parker
    10 Parker

    96-94 Parker

I'd heard alot of good things about this fight, but if i'm being completely honest. I didn't overly enjoy the fight, there was too much mauling and sloppiness for me.

But anyway this was a fight of two halves, 1st round Hamsho came out on the backfoot trying to box, and Parker won the fight round being the aggressor.

The next 3 rounds Hamsho mauled and brawled Parker along the ropes, and he won them rounds just by being way more active and the aggressor.

But after the 4th round the fight turned around, Hamsho was still mauling and brawling but he wasn't throwing as many punches as earlier, and i felt like Parker was landing the better punches and out landed Hamsho.

The final round was a tough round to score, as there wasn't many effective punches landed. And it mostly just alot of mauling, but in the final seconds of the round Parker landed a right hand that made Hamsho stumble. So i scored the round for Parker based on that, and thus he won the fight for me 96-94.

Curtis Parker v Mustafa Hamsho I (scored on NJ's rounds basis)

    Round 1: Parker
    Round 2: Hamsho
    Round 3: Hamsho
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Parker
    Round 6: Parker
    Round 7: Parker
    Round 8: Parker
    Round 9: Even
    Round 10: Parker

Total: 6-2-2 Parker (actual scores: 7-3 Parker and 2 scores of 5-4-1 for Hamsho for a split win)

Funny story on this one. A buddy of mine back in the day was as much a fight nut as I am and we bet on every fight. I liked Parker in this fight and he liked Hamsho. After the fight he was so sure on the decision that he paid me before the decision was announced. That's how sure we were that Parker won. The laugh was on me when the verdict was announced and we had to re-exchange the cash. This always sticks with me on what a bad decision it was.

    Great story thanks for sharing.

I wasn't even born when all these action packed Jr
Middleweights/Middleweights were slugging it out. But it's one of my favourite eras.

Don King beat down more fighters than Archie Moore and Ray Robinson put together.
