Francesco Damiani was the WBO champ when Buster Douglas and Holyfield won the 'World" Title. Ray Mercer and Michael Moorer were also WBO champs during Holyfield's reign. The point is the winner of a Fury-Usyk fight will be the first man to hold all four of those major titles at the same time. The last time anyone held all the major titles simultaneously and was undefeated was Mike Tyson in 1989 when there were only three major belts.
Riddick Bowe had already lost when he won the WBO belt. He wasn't undefeated. He no longer held the other three. We're talking about people who were undefeated and held all the major belts simultaneously.
So it was Tyson. Only the winner of this fight will have, as you said, a fourth WBO title to under his name this is it gonna be a(n) historic fight…… if it comes off I realize unified and undisputed are repetitive, but there could be someone still dispute the unified titleholder over a reasonably questionable outcome, I guess. I use all three terms to make this title seem all the more “grand and historic”, as if to say “no question, whatsoever” how about this man’s status
And it's theoretically possible to Unify the Major Belts and still have a different active Lineal Heavyweight Champion out there, who beat the man, hasn't lost it in the ring, but has none of the Major belts. In that case there certainly could be a dispute over who the real Champion is.
By the time Lennox Lewis unified with Holyfield, the WBO title had been around for a decade and Vitali Klitschko, Riddick Bowe, George Foreman, Michael Moorer, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, etc., had all fought for it. In fact, Foreman lost his WBO title challenge, then won the IBF, WBA and lineal title in his next outing. The point is this would be the first time someone has held all four of the titles since Mike Tyson held all three titles in 1989, before the WBO existed. The winner of Fury-Usyk would be the first time someone has held all four belts and the Ring championship at heavyweight. Fury and Bowe won all four belts, but they didn't hold them simultaneously. It would be nice. Especially if Usyk does it, as he's unbeaten and untied. As the reigning WBO champion, Moorer could've been the last to do it (win all the belts and be unbeaten and untied). But Bowe dropped the WBC into a trash can before losing his rematch to Holyfield, and Moorer dumped the WBO belt before challenging Holyfield. But Moorer hadn't lost before he fought Evander. Having a heavyweight champ with all the major belts and the Ring championship would be a signature achievement. Nothing like a little clarity.
Right. But it would be nice to see a champion with all the belts and the Ring/Lineal title, too. We're OH SO close to seeing it.
If we can only get there. So close, yet so far, as they say. It’ll probably be a short lived status, as the various orgs will start to strip him of their title due to inability to meet their mandatories But boxing fans should (key) then continue to deem him THE man, even after he starts to lose the titles
Oh I definitely agree with this. My point was basically: A. Lennox was the last undisputed heavyweight champion. B. Bowe was the last undefeated as undisputed. The WBO is a strange situation because it took about 15 years before it was truly recognized as a major world title. But a 4 belt undisputed at heavyweight would be mighty significant, regardless of whether the man who ultimately earns that distinction is undefeated.
