Mike, I wish there was footage out there of his bouts with Hedgemon Lewis and Adolph Pruitt. Two great wins.

 

Talking of Pruitt, well remember the lead up his fight with my all time fav Jose Napoles , their was a little bit of bad blood between the two boxers, Pruitt was sort of dissing Jose saying how Napoles was avoiding him ( as if ! ) and what a beating was coming his way.
The usually calm and collective Napoles was agitated by the comments, to the extent he promised Adolph a short but brutal hiding for daring to suggest such an abomination, come fight time Jose was straining at the lease couldn't wait for the opening bell, which as you know was out of character, his MO was to start slowly, appraising the opposition , probing for openings, for his vaunted hooks, not tonight.
From memory, the 1st was fairly uneventful , the 2nd rather less so, Jose set upon Pruitt like a tiger would to a tethered goat, hooks, uppercuts, they all found their mark , Pruitt was like a sailor on a ship deck whilst in a violent storm, nothing Adolph could do to stop the torrent of blows coming his way, Napoles was at his merciless best, Pruitt was going to pay for his insolence and them some.
By the time the ref stopped the slaughter, Pruitt's face was a mass of cuts and bruises, and swelling by the second, fighters had fought for 15 rounds and had not shipped so much punishment, he was nether the same, I remember the writer of the Ring magazine outlining the massacre thus " It was the biggest mismatch in these parts, since Pancho Villa took on the firing squad " it could well have Jose finest hour.

Thanks for the insight, Mike. I too saw the fight out of character of Napoles. Like you said, he generally sat back and let the fight unfold. If the opponent wasn't doing much of anything (like the Menetrey fight), Napoles was content to not exert himself and let it go 15. But if you pressed the situation or stung Napoles or did anything to embarass him, you were generally done like dinner. I remember watching his fight with Ralph Charles and watching him take his time, but Charles caught him with something and he simply went into the next gear and stopped him. In the Pruitt fight I thought Pruitt - normally a counter-puncher - went on the attack, which spurred Napoles into immediate retaliation mode. I didn't know the goings-on before the fight. Unwise to pull the tiger's tail at the weigh-in.
