I always thought, if the Promoters, the Demand, and the Money were there, either of them would have fought Sam Langford for the title. I doubt if Sam could have beaten either of them when they were Champions. (IMHO, of course.) Thanks for posting the Video!
Nice to watch but the conclusions are heavily slanted. eg Johnson signed to fight Langford in Australia but the promoter pulled the plug on the fight when Jack skipped bail and public opinion turned against Johnson. Johnson pulled out of a rematch with Langford which he signed for in1907 prior to winning the title, his purse was to have been £3000 approx $14,000,once champion he decided he wanted the same as Burns had demanded to defend against him ie $30,000 the National SportingClub which was to stage the fight refused to up their offer and it never happened. Johnson's price for a title defence was $30,000 not $10,000 Dempsey was a young up and comer when his callous manager tried to match him with Langford. When Dempsey was champ Langford was 36 years old and half blind since Fulton's left jab damaged his optic nerve in their 1917 fight. Langford v then Champion Dempsey in1919 onwards would have been an unconsciable slaughter. Langford named Dempsey as the greatest heavyweight he ever saw. Bert Sugar tells his usual apocryphal BS stories. Langford was a very great fighter and there's no need for any embroidering of his career,he stands out as one of the best P4P of all time. Thanks for posting the video .
Thanks man. Could nit pick a few facts but really nicely presented and very informative for those not so familiar with Sam if at all - as reflected in many of the duly impressed YouTube comments. The more newly informed and enlightened fans, the better. Lots of talented people out there putting these video packages together. Totally agree with @Barrf, the narrator has a great timbre to his voice - perfect for docs like Unforgivable Blackness alongside Samuel L. etc.
Langford was avoided by a prime Jack Johnson and a pre prime Dempsey. A shame he'd be either mans best opponent.
Sam had one of the best careers and is one of the best boxers of all time.... and never won a world title....
Johnson and Dempsey were overrated can crushers who ducked the best fighters of their era while fighting no hopers and cab drivers. No wonder.
