In my opinion...the biggest upset in the history of sports...bigger than Douglas vs Tyson .....because at least Douglas vs Tyson makes since in hindsight

Ruben was heavily favored to win that fight. The perception was that all of Rose’s title fights were close, he went down a few times and Olivares was an irresistible knockout force.

The title is " most impressive in boxing history " honestly don't see the win over Rose in that category, Olivares was something like 50-0-01 with around 47 KOs, he was the most exciting and feared Bantam of the late 60s, I haven't looked up the odds or who was the favourite, but would be mildly surprised if it was Rose , but as always on this site, you pays your money, and takes your pick . stay safe buddy.

Randy Turpin was the 1st boxer to ever beat Sugar Ray in 11 years as a pro that didn't have a significant weight pull.
Turpin didn't have longevity because mainly personal problems but at that short peak he was nightmare for many.

Often times I’m wrong I wouldn’t flatter myself with the title of even mediocre historian lol but from what I can deduce KOs or not Ruben had a shallow resume compared to Rose at the time whom close fights or not bad faced tougher iron then Olivares whose scalp and only desirable win is the fighter Takao who Rose had already beaten.

I’d say Rhben looked more impressive in doing away with him (Being Rose won by MD and Olivares a stoppage) but I think personally if I saw the two on paper I’d be expecting Rose to win in a shut out close calls or not at that point in time the difference in class should’ve been apparent when you compare resumes.

This is of course my 0.2$ I think what Ruben did would’ve been shocking. The people I’ve spoke with who were alive at the time conceded mixed feelings when it happened but a majority said they’d expected Rose to have won… (I do live in AUS though so lol) but if I’m wrong have at it I usually am boxing love or not lol.

I don’t consider it the “most impressive” I’m just dropping ideas but in context of when it happened it’d have to be shocking. IMO. Read my response to Chris on the matter. You stay safe too fella!

Zárate was also favorite over Rodolfo Martinez, despite Martinez’s stronger resume up to that point in time. In Mexico and LA, nobody gave Lionel much chance against Olivares.

While it wasn't boxing's biggest upset ever, I certainly agree with you that is was the most impressive win in the history of boxing. Big George came back, in his second career, and won the Lineal Heavyweight Championship of the World. What a grand accomplishment!

I didn’t know that thanks. But it makes you wonder how much of that is influenced from how good he looked crushing so many average guys?

If I showed you the pair on paper at the time of the fight would you not favour Rose yourself based on the strength of his resume? Ruben has a single decent win at the time and a lot of fodder he was relatively unproven.

It can also fall flat on its face. Thankfully on this occasion we got one of the best ever.

Coming into Olivares-Rose, Ruben had comprehensively beaten Medel (although older), Sakurai by KO (he’d given Rose a close fight), Kanazawa, Octavio Gomez (an excellent fighter) and Salvatore Burruni (former champ), Harada’s brother, so he was definitely battle tested.

I’m gonna need to read up more on those guys Octavia, Burruni, Kanazawa, and Haradas brother my knowledge in all areas of boxing is thin and full of holes a lot like Swiss cheese but from what I do know id still personally favour Lionel but let’s put a pen in this for now.

Do you have an answer for the thread question Chris?
