It's a fair point. Is RJJ the ultimate example of how when someone ends their career can impact their whole legacy? Would his legacy be better if he retired in 2003?

"I became Heavyweight champion of the world"

"Eubank Jnr could be as good as me" (Paraphrasing)

    Cmon Roy...

It does seem to undermine Roy's own point that he's on the level of Robinson if Eubank could equal him.

Roy was a great fighter but I cringe everytime he says he was heavyweight champion of the world. Beating John Ruiz doesn't make him THE heavyweight champ. He won an alphabet title unlike when Michael Spinks who beat Larry Holmes or Michael Moorer who beat Evander Holyfield.

He was a great fighter. I certainly don't count those past prime losses against him at all.

His resume is kinda not good enough. The two elite fighters he beat are Hopkins and Toney and that's probably about it. Other than than, all the fighters he beat are just.... kinda good. Like Merqui Sosa, Montell Griffin, Thomas Tate, Glenn Kelly, Tony Thornton, Jorge Castro, Vinny Pazienza.... All of those are just "kinda good" fighters. Hey, as much as I love Sosa, I hate admit it but he's just a average fighter who failed when step up to elite competition.

If John Ruiz was actually the heavyweight champion of the world his argument would-be stronger. Roy is one of the greats. Awesome talent but he wasn't the heavyweight champion of the world. He moved up and beat a product of Don King's imagination. A journeymen.

Robinson learned boxing in the 1930s. Jones is an evolutionary step above him, and about 25 pounds bigger.

Bit like fighting Joe Maxim. A cherrypick.
